A 13-year-old student at Plaza Middle School in Virginia Beach, Va., was given in-school suspension after a teacher reported he used an American flag to wipe his hands after going to the bathroom, WTKR-TV reports.
According to the station, the young boy claimed there were no napkins left in the bathroom when the teacher confronted about the incident.
“[This has been] very traumatic,” Victoria Hinton, the boy's mother, told WTKR-TV. “It has had an emotional impact on my son’s education.”
Hinton also spoke with WAVY-TV, telling the station she believed the teacher overreacted in handling the situation.
"Why didn't you just take him aside and first ask him, 'Hey, is everything okay?''' Hinton told the station. "And then proceed by saying, 'well, you know, the American flag is something we respect and we hold very high in our country, so you know, just keep that in mind.'"
Despite his mothers' protest, the school maintains the boy was "disciplined in accordance with the Code of Student Conduct."
You guys and your obsession with a piece of cloth.
BREAKING NEWS: american education system still retarded
This reminds me of the story where a kid stuck a wad of gum on a $1.5m painting in an art museum.
At least his mom knows this is nuts.

You guys and your obsession with your queens and princes.
Reminds me of my old teacher who didn't allow us to sing the Norwegian anthem with any different lyrics than the original.
But at least we never got suspended for it.
Huge overreaction on the school's part and not worthy of a news story. Although it's a bit of a stretch to say it was 'traumatic' for the child, I agree with the mother.
Also, stupid thread title as well.
This is what happens when you teach kids it's not courteous to wipe their hands on their pants, people.
You raise communists.
Well, it's the nation's flag, it needs to be treated with respect. Hell the kid's 13 years old, he should know better then to wipe his godamned hands on the flag.
Edit:
Oh god what have I started
It's funny because a lot of american flags are made in china
oh no he LIQUIDISED our nations pride!
KILL HIM WITH FIRE

My cousin has an american flag covering his gokart in the backyard, it even has burns and oil on it just like america.
That's ridiculous.

Yeah the Japanese have kind of cornered the market on that one
Eh, I think he shouldn't have done it. The school shouldn't act so harsh about it. I do not except people from other countries to agree with me, but think of it in this way, a Flag represents a nation as a whole.
Every nation has a flag, and it is kinda proper sense you should at least respect it. If there was no napkins left, then just shake your hands off, don't grab the flag whether it's American, German, British, Russian, or freakin Santa Clauses and use it. The whole "it's just a piece of cloth" might be true, but it's also a symbol that you should respect regardless of what nation it's from.

I wouldn't really give a shit because there's more than 1 flag in existence fortunately and they can be replaced relatively easily.

An American flag isn't worth $1.5m.

They're supposed to be symbolic for the PRIDE AND GLORY of America but in my eyes it's just another piece of fabric
So would you be happy with me wiping my wet hands all over your flag?

You have to keep in mind hes just a kid, he may not know what the flag symbolizes or how important it is to us, to him it is, just a piece of cloth, suspension was way to harsh, maybe an explanation on how important the flag is would have helped him more.
