Two women were taken into custody after they were discovered peering into cars in a downtown parking garage in Santa Cruz, Calif. One woman was found to have outstanding warrants; the other was carrying illegal drugs. But the presence of the police officers in the garage that Friday afternoon in July was anything but ordinary: They were directed to the parking structure by a computer program that had predicted that car burglaries were especially likely there that day. The program is part of an unusual experiment by the Santa Cruz Police Department in predictive policing — deploying officers in places where crimes are likely to occur in the future.
Go technology. Sounds like Minority Report
That's fucking amazing, how does it work?
Flippin' cool. The future is upon us boys.
Multivac!
this could lead to more control. This is possibly a bad thing. More like 1984 every day.
Obligatory Minority Report reference.
Anyone else think of the crazy psychic police robot from Futurama?
Instantly reminded me of "You are under arrest for crimes that you are going to commit."
this could lead to more control. This is possibly a bad thing. More like 1984 every day.
Yes they are controlling peoples freedom to steal what people earned. That's just not right now is it :v:
Oh jeez, this is kind of scary. For some reason it reminded me of the Doctor Who episode with that monster that took over people then read others' minds, saying what they said after, then at the same time... Then before.
Anyone else think of the crazy psychic police robot from Futurama?
Are you saying you haven't watched minority report? If you haven't do it now. [editline]18th August 2011[/editline] Precrime ftw
this could lead to more control. This is possibly a bad thing. More like 1984 every day.
What the shit. Did you even read the book?
It would be easy to not get caught, just produce a higher probability crime rate in another area then do the crimes in the lesser probability area. Though this is still nice, and it should cut down on some crime for sure.

And I don't think any criminal is even smart enough to create a program that shows spots less likely to have crime. If a criminal can make a program like that, then I don't think someone with that much knowledge and skill would think it is a good idea of committing such a simple idiotic crime.
Anyone else think of the crazy psychic police robot from Futurama?
That's what exactly what came to my mind.
That's fucking amazing, how does it work?
time travel
That's fucking amazing, how does it work?
i would assume it takes the amount of crime that has happened and checks it with the conditions that seem to coincide with the crime. so if a neighborhood is troubled by burglaries but it seems like monday nights have the highest incidence of burglaries the program would point officers towards that neighborhood on a monday night of course more complex than that
Sounds like Minority Report
It IS Minority Report. Only without Tom Cruise's shitty acting.
Awesome.
It IS Minority Report. Only without Tom Cruise's shitty acting.
And constant scenes of how well he can run.
This reminds me about futurama episode about the robot who sees crime before it happens
Epic, now we need puke rods and jet packs
And constant scenes of how well he can run.
And balls. A lot less balls.
I'm scared to ever think about doing anything illegal...
This is a nice way to dynamically increase security in certain areas where and when crime is more probable.
That is pretty cool. Have none of you seen or read The Minority Report though? That Futurama episode was pretty much a huge reference to it.
This is nothing new, humans can spot patterns you know? Most decent police would have noticed or figured out that that was a prime time for burglaries.
Damn, I can't think of any The Minority Report jokes to make
Obligatory Minority Report reference.
Pre-Crime: It Works! That movie was pretty interesting.
