Russia is Returning to the Moon, Paving the Way for a Crewed Landing
In recent years, Roscosmos has largely concentrated on crewed missions, struggling to get a spaceprobe to its intended destination. But Luna 25 hopes to change that. The moon probe, set to launch in 2024, will mark a return to the moon for Russia, which hasn't landed a probe on the moon since 1976. It's a surveyor for an even bigger goal: a crewed landing and lunar base.
Tomasz Nowakowski at SpaceFlightInsider writes, "The proposed base would include a solar power station, telecommunication station, technological station, scientific station, long-range research rover, landing and launch area, and an orbiting satellite." The moon base, if it comes to fruition, would be built in the 2030s.
But without a probe landing to the moon since the Soviet days, and with N1/L3 moon landing program never getting beyond craft fabrication, it could be a tall order for the country. Roscosmos engineers are saying that, in part, one of the big challenges will be relearning to land a probe on the moon. And without a probe landing, a crewed landing seems ever more unlikely, though the country has proven canny at most other crewed spaceflight accomplishments.
Awesome! About time man returns to the moon.
another country is doing something in space again so now others will too, it's disappointing though the only reasons for getting involved in any space exploration are purely political
And we're going to beat them to Mars :smug:
I just imagine if Russia lands on the moon, one of the cosmonauts are probably going to tear down the american flag we got up there.
i think this is a good thing regardless of who goes there
look how much technology was developed for the space race and subsequently passed into every home
I really hope a Second Space Race starts if this works, since between the Moon and Mars we really need to start working towards offworld settlements.

it'd probably be best to pick a new, distant-from-that-site area to explore for new data

That would require Russia to act like a calm and reasonable country.
Fat chance.
"returns" to the moon?

thanks obama for budget cuts

I read The Martian and that book mentioned something I'd never thought of before, related to your comment.
How much, if anything, does human stuff on the Moon and/or other places like Mars count as 'historical'?
If another country, whether Russian or China or whoever, sent people to the Moon and did mess with items left there by the US, would the world be outraged or would people think "Meh, it's just a bunch of junk you left behind"?

Well, i guess it would cause some outrage at least. Considering the site itself was were humanity first stepped onto the moon, if you were Chinese, Russian, or hell even American. Fucking with that stuff would piss off anybody frankly.
I just imagine if Russia lands on the moon, one of the cosmonauts are probably going to tear down the american flag we got up there.
That's assuming the flag is still even intact. The conditions on the Moon are extreme both in terms of temperature variation and solar radiation exposure.
Thank god we gutted NASA and invested in SpaceX instead!
Oh wait.
The flag is likely still there but just white from sun bleaching.

You mean the american flag that has turnd white, due to all the solar radiation

In all fairness if another space race crops up it'll have the benefit of raising interest/demand for space exploration.

The kind of people Russia China or the US or anyone sends on these missions wouldn't fuck around with historical sites unless they absolutely had to, besides which the Apollo sites are important scientific sites and should be explored again someday but not without caution because there is a lot we could learn about the moon and how spacecraft fare there

Flag's not up there. They packed it up when they left, it was just for the broadcast.

We then send an army of American astronauts to the moon armed to the teeth with tons of guns and space vehicles, plant another flag, then leave.

Welp, We got to get on the moon before them again.

Yet Nasa says otherwise

It just says that the flag was knocked over

This. Astronauts on the ISS, and for the most part those coming before them on joint missions, care little for nationality; only for science. This is the kind of dedication required to do the job they do. More should follow their example!

And even if they did care about nationality and if they weren't astronauts, why the hell would anyone normal just go ruin historical sites whether it's on the moon or on Earth. Unless you're ISIS I guess :v:
I don't even care anymore as long we use our resources for space travel to get more resources and further explore instead of trying to kill eachother.

the ISIS ISS
A horrific nightmare
Flag's not up there. They packed it up when they left, it was just for the broadcast.
Nope, it's still there
Short of a direct impact of some sort, the landers and flags will be there until the sun explodes. The pyramids will erode and eventually the dirt that remained would find its way to the bottom of the tectonic plates and be erased.
But on the moon? Unless an impact disturbs it, those landers will forever be there. They'll be a permanent historical landmark for the human race long after we're gone. It would be a shame of someone went up there and fucked with it like a bully kid knocking over another kid's sand castle, with about the same mentality and reasoning behind it

As in Homo Sapiens
cant wait for space race 2.0
