The sun has "flipped upside down", with its north and south poles reversed to reach the midpoint of Solar Cycle 24, Nasa has said. Now, the magnetic fields will once again started moving in opposite directions to begin the completion of the 22 year long process which will culminate in the poles switching once again. "A reversal of the sun's magnetic field is, literally, a big event," said Nasa’s Dr. Tony Phillips. "The domain of the sun's magnetic influence (also known as the 'heliosphere') extends billions of kilometers beyond Pluto. Changes to the field's polarity ripple all the way out to the Voyager probes, on the doorstep of interstellar space." To mark the event, Nasa has released a visualisation of the entire process. At the beginning, in 1997 the video shows the sun in Solar Cycle 23 with its positive polarity on the top (the green lines), and the negative polarity on the bottom (the purple lines). Each set of lines gradually move toward the opposite pole, showing a complete flip around 2002, completing the sun's previous cycle. Both set of lines representing the opposing magnetic fields then begin to work their way back, to culminate in the latest flip. "At the height of each magnetic flip, the sun goes through periods of more solar activity, during which there are more sunspots, and more eruptive events such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections," said Nasa’s Karen C. Fox. "Cosmic rays are also affected," added Dr. Phillips. "These are high-energy particles accelerated to nearly light speed by supernova explosions and other violent events in the galaxy."
Source P.S. this happens every 11~ years.
The video in question:
Prepare for ejections, Solar flares, energy flying in all directions, Plasma arching, flowing with the cosmic wind, I looked out, I grinned, it only posed more questions.
I think that means some really nasty weather next year, 1998 style
Prepare for ejections, Solar flares, energy flying in all directions, Plasma arching, flowing with the cosmic wind, I looked out, I grinned, it only posed more questions.
see i don't give a fuck cause i keep bellin' yo what the fuck are they yellin gangsta gangsta
The video in question:
It looks like an album cover or something.
see i don't give a fuck cause i keep bellin' yo what the fuck are they yellin gangsta gangsta
yo nigga nigga, yo universe is gettin' bigga', can't handle the heat, like a bitch gettin' beat'
yo nigga nigga, yo universe is gettin' bigga', can't handle the heat, like a bitch gettin' beat'
In the beginning, there was no sin. We in the ninth inning, I'm God body, trying to win, flying against the wind. My shell is weightless and fire proof, but I'm proof of living fire! [editline]30th December 2013[/editline] wait why are we doing this sort of non-sense ?
Can we have a new word for Mutated Neutrinos? Meutinos?
I read the title and instantly thought of Dara O'Briein wearing a sombrero. "And they're heating up the planet! Cha cha cha"
Can we have a new word for Mutated Neutrinos? Meutinos?
newtrinos?
Title misleading, I thought it was something related to CERN for a second.
What part of the title made you think it was CERN? No Just make poem instead
What part of the title made you think it was CERN? [editline]30th December 2013[/editline] Another science thread Care about its contents? The article doesn't make mention of neutrinos at all either.

I'm not a physicist, but I do care about the contents, more than you could ever expect, it would appear. I've been studying a fair amount and keeping up with scientific advancements god forbid I want to make a tiny poem whislt doing a little light reading. Now that work is finished maybe I do want to discuss and learn more. Alos, you have contributed less than me.
Does this affect Earth at all? Like our poles or our ionosphere?

Any thread on a scientific topic on this forum is almost always reduced to a random deep statement about how big the universe is and how small we are etc. People don't really care about the specific content of the thread and post the same things as long as it involves space. It's fine if you want to post poems, but something that contributes to any kind of meaningful discussion would be nice too.

Interesting article. I will admit that I clicked the thread thinking for some reason this had something to do with the 2 off side characters from the original 1987 Ninja Turtles cartoon, The Neutrinos. I had no idea this happens every 11 years. I was gonna ask if anything was known about long term effects, but if it happens regularly I guess things are just gonna go on like always.
Does this affect Earth at all? Like our poles or our ionosphere?
Yes the world will flip also and Australia will be on top and the internet will start making upside-down 'Meanwhile in America' memes.
