The ventilation stack for phase two of the Chernobyl plant (units 3 and 4) is 75.5 metres tall and has a diameter of 9.0 metres. It comprises seven sections weighing a combined 330 tonnes. The top of the stack is 150 metres above ground level. The top section of the stack was removed on 31 October. The section has been placed on a special prepared site where it will be dismantled further, prior to being placed in the turbine hall of unit 3 for temporary storage. ... The dismantling work is being carried out by Ukrtransbud Corporation using a giant crane with a load capacity of 1600 tonnes. The operation to remove the entire stack is scheduled to be completed by 10 December.
They're taking it down so they can slide the New Safe Confinement over the reactor. In fact they're almost done now [t]http://imgkk.com/i/ohjd.jpg[/t] [t]http://imgkk.com/i/4gk-.jpg[/t] [t]http://imgkk.com/i/vuot.jpg[/t] imgur album chnpp.gov.ua
So iconic...
I love that the ultimate solution to the CNPP problem is just "put it in a big box".
Awwh. :c I wonder how many shifts the people have to take to keep the rads down.

Here is a thread on /hr/ - High Resolution that has a ton of pictures on this process and the construction of the NPP's new sarcophagus [img_thumb]http://puu.sh/5lhl9.jpg[/img_thumb] https://boards.4chan.org/hr/res/1943349
I love that the ultimate solution to the CNPP problem is just "put it in a big box".
There's nothing all that odd about that when it's the only solution. The funny part would be "And what are we going to do when the box starts leaking?" "Put the box into a bigger box!"

Shame, I always wanted to visit and see it in it's full before the sarcophagus was put into place.
then suddenly a blowout.
I'm still confused for the most part on the radiation levels surrounding the place. How can they work for so long in that radiation without having any type of poisoning. That, along with the sped of rate of decay for the steel, and the now contaminated vehicles. Or has the radiation subsided enough to allow for all of this for some period of time
the radiation has subsided except for a few places inside the sarcofigus, the new "box" is being equipped with a set of remote controlled cranes which will allow them to actually continue dismantling the dangerous collapse prone parts of the reactor. also this box is designed to withstand weathering for over 1000 years without maintinence

Hell someone YouTube has filmed sitting in crane hooks that removed debris from the reactor and being in it for over 5 hours. It's not really dangerous to go around areas like the ferris wheel or the machinery, just don't go inside the reactor. Or has the radiation subsided enough to allow for all of this for some period of time
So its below the imminent danger level, but is still high enough to not allow rebuilding/clearing?
I think the creation of the shell is really cool and one of the best most viable solutions to containing the CNPP, but I'm really sad that it has become an actual thing. The CNPP and the Chernobyl disaster are such iconic things. It really is a shame to see a piece of history get covered up with a big box.

Also mother nature has a habit of helping disperse rads by eating the contaminates with plants/tree and mutated fauna. So some places are quiet safe while others can be incredibly lethal. However the reactor and any of its runoff are extremely dangerous. Thats why they are doing this slowly and carefully. Also they put a lot of time an effort into cleaning up a path to the reactor. But its not like you can just go there and take a stroll anywhere you want. Hotspots are still a very sneaky and deadly thing. TL:DR The area they are working is safeish. And the parts that arnt they use robots. Or people are already irradiated and volunteer to work there (As they are dead already)
Well, another thing to remember too is that radiation is bad; but it's not so much the gamma radiation that is the direct problem with cases like this but is inhalation/consumption of radioactive elements that causes the major issues. They want to seal the Uranium core to prevent more leaking into the environment with the hopes that in a hundred years or two they can begin rebuilding the region.
such is life in pripyat (metro)
I look forward to the day, where people will thrive in this land again. It'll be incredible. Imagine seeing a whole city back alive again.

The skyline will certainly be different now. It's obscured by clouds/fog here, but you get the idea. Also shows how massive the new containment cover is.
Actually, the immediate area surrounding the reactor, at least on the outside, is the least irradiated part in the whole exclusion zone. This is due to extensive removal of contaminated material and cleanups done, for example all soil several meters down were removed and new earth/concrete were brought in, in order to clean the area to allow workers to be there without getting too irradiated.
They said the same thing in Pacific Rim...
I've never seen that movie
Isn't the new structure designed to dismantle and clean up Chernobyl over time? I swore I saw it in a youtube demonstration video unless that idea was ditched.
It'll never leave The Zone...

And the radiation will stop in about 20 000 years unless we find somewthing that causes things to decay super-fast
