But Zombii! Another thread about astronomy? This isn't just any thread on astronomy this is one on DARK MATTER, DARK ENERGY, AND DARK FLOW (:science:) So without any fancy introductions or anything. I'm going to assume you know a little bit of astronomy. DARK FLOW: HOLY SHIT A RIPTIDE WERGWERGWERG Dark flow is a recently discovered phenomenon that involves rather large galaxy clusters and a point outside of the visible universe. Dark Flow is the drifting of galactic clusters (The largest structures in existence) towards a spot outside the visible universe. This point is supposed to be at least 46.5 Billion Light Years away. (Just to put that in perspective. The farthest event we've ever observed was a gamma-ray burst 13 BILLION Light Years away.) For all we know, the point we're drifting toward could be anything from the center of the universe to an alien galaxy zoo. Alexander Kashlinsky (holy shit the same guy who came up with the 46.BLY number.) and his team discovered it while studying the CMB (Cosmic Background Radition, leftover electromagnetic radiation from the Big Bang.) Because when galaxies move through space, they drag electrons with them, which scatter the CMB, like the wake of a boat. By studying the CMB they discovered that all galatic clusters were drifting toward a single point. Of course, they can't see whatever is causing this since it's outside the visible universe. Now on to... DARK ENERGY: Also known as, the stuff Dr. Evil powers his sharks with. You see, the universe is breaking a lot of rules right now. Dark Energy is the result of one. Dark Energy is the fact that the universe if expanding much more rapidly than it should. Physicists believe that the energy required to power this accelerated expansion is more than is contained in all the known matter and dark matter. That means that, well, something has to power this expansion, right? Well, if you thought that, you'd be correct, and whatever is powering this expansion is what Physicists have labeled Dark Energy. DARK MATTER: Invisible walls, EXPLAINED! In 1933, this guy named Fritz Zwicky discovered that the speed of galaxies orbiting the galactic clusters didn't exactly add up. There just wasn't enough mass in a cluster to produce the amount of gravity needed to maintain the speed the galaxies were maintaining without flying off into space. The missing stuff was named Dark Matter. Right now the estimate of Dark matter to normal matter is about 5:1. Of course, no one knows what the hell is going on.
cool, but this is all pretty useless and I dont see why it needed a thread
What are you talking about? You can look up at stars at night that are many many times more than 13 light-years away.
see you didnt even get your shit right, this is what you get for taking "facts" from your animes
What are you talking about? You can look up at stars at night that are many many times more than 13 light-years away.
What are you talking about? You can look up at stars at night that are many many times more than 13 light-years away.
And here's the article if you don't believe me. http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/090428-gamma-burst.html
It's theoretical still.. You posted "you know a little bit of astronomy". Dark Matter and Dark Energy are just theories to make collected data make sense. They real factors COULD be the influence of dark matter or energy or they could be something else. Again, theoretical. Neither have been detected, only deduced. Never heard of Dark Flow.. If the results you listed add up, it's an interesting conclusion. EDIT: Good thread imo. Much better than "this happened to me in school today" threads or "am i a bad person?"
Oh, 13 BILLION light-years away. You were off by 9 orders of magnitude.
Oh, 13 BILLION light-years away. You were off by 9 orders of magnitude.
this
You didn't explain what they should mean to me???
Of course they're theoretical. We don't know jack shit about any of them other than there's something there that has to exist to make our previous conclusions make sense. And by the whole "little bit of astronomy" thing, I meant that you know about things like the CMB and galactic clusters.
i can't stand the suspense!!
Cool :buddy:
whoops, thanks for pointing that out JohnnyMo1. Simple mistake.
Are we gonna die?
edited the op
I would like to know how they know the universe is "expanding".
fffff Stop breaking my Automerge. Also no, we are not going to die, at least not before our natural deaths.
46 billion light years. Also, dark matter is hypothetical, it's literally something that is not there but causes effects on the universe, same with dark energy. It's not really all that fun, it's math.
it wasnt a simple mistake it was a dumb mistake
it wasnt a simple mistake it was a dumb mistake
It wasn't a simple mistake, it wasn't a dumb mistake.... It was a common sense kind of mistake but whatever, let it die.
It wasn't a simple mistake, it wasn't a dumb mistake.... It was a common sense kind of mistake but whatever, let it die.
dumb mistake sorry
Just don't reply to Parky. His main is currently banned for trolling. Just report and move on.
This thread is no longer about cool science. It is now about Facepunchers bitching and whining about one grammatical error.
Lets get this thread back on track. I was watching a video the other day about this. Many scientists including NASA as a whole believe that the universe is expanding, and at an unusual rate i should say. They just don't know where all the matter is coming from. I dont know, im having a brain fart

Is the fact that the amount of energy needed to power the accelerated expansion of the universe would take more mass-energy than we know exists.
I read this in the latest Popular Science.
That drifting galaxy thing is quite interesting, I shall look into this.
So basically....these are just 3 theories that explain that scientists have absolutely no idea what is going on in space.
I like this thread. Now explain M theory and string theory.
