As much as they are trying to avoid admitting to it, arming the opposition will inevitably arm Islamists they will have to probably deal with in the future.
At least Russia has a clear idea of who they're arming.
Why are we still fucking playing little Cold War games in the middle east? can't we just leave the place alone already? We can't afford this.

Russia, as the USSR, has diminished in power and rivalry but that does not mean it's gone away or that we're all bffs.

Dear USA, if you're so hell-bent on shoving your dick into Syria, at least be careful enough to avoid arming the radical Islamic rebels.
Signed, the rest of the world.
I say arm Assad so that he can crush the rebellion.
Yeah arm the rebels, that won't backfire in the future at all.
Yeah, arm the idiots
I say burn the country into oblivion and divide it into tiny little countries
Anybody with sense would avoid that conflict like the plague because it will come back them in the ass.
I say arm Assad so he can crush the rebellion.
Once he's done, crush Assad.
Once done with that, wall off the entirety of Syria and turn it into a prison and send the world's human waste there.
So many problems solved at once.

Because that worked so well with Australia.

Where in the article did it say specifically that the US were going to be arming the rebels? I wouldn't be surprised if they were, but I couldn't see it in the article.

Qatar & Jordan are arming the rebels too, Hezbollah is also directly supporting Assad.
US isn't arming the rebels, what is everyone talking about?
In this article Obama even says that a political solution is 'the only way we're going to resolve this crisis'
"We're going to keep increasing the pressure on the Assad regime, and working with the Syrian opposition," Obama said. "The prime minister has been on the forefront of the international effort to push for a transition to a democratic Syria without Bashar Assad. And Turkey is going to play an important role as we bring representatives of the regime and opposition together in the coming weeks."
Obama said he and Erdogan agree that al-Assad needs to transfer power.
"That is the only way we're going to resolve this crisis. And we're going to keep working for a Syria that is free from Assad's tyranny, that is intact and inclusive of all ethnic and religious groups, and that's a source of stability, not extremism, because it's in the profound interest of all our nations, especially Turkey."
AFAIK the last word we heard from the USA on arming the rebels was Chuck Hagel on 5 May:
During a Pentagon news conference with Hammond, Hagel said: "Arming the rebels – that's an option. You look at and rethink all options. It doesn't mean you do or you will ... It doesn't mean that the president has decided on anything."
Speaking at a news conference in Mexico City, Obama said he supported Hagel's earlier comments. "We are continually evaluating the situation on the ground, working with our international partners to find the best way to move a political transition," he said, speaking alongside the Mexican president, Enrique Peña Nieto. "As we've seen evidence of further bloodshed, potential use of chemical weapons inside of Syria, what I've said is that we're going to look at all options."
Which is pretty far from 'tax dollars arming al-Qaeda'. The EU is also continuing to block its member states from arming anyone in the conflict.
It's pretty clear that some of Syria's neighbours and other Arab states are already arming the rebels, but the USA does understand the threat from extremist rebels in Syria:
Barack Obama delivered a grave warning on Friday about the danger of post-Assad Syria becoming a haven for Islamist extremists.
He portrayed a nightmare scenario in which Syrian institutions were destroyed beyond recognition and the country divided by sectarianism, with jihadists filling the gap.
"Something has been broken in Syria, and it's not going to be put back together perfectly immediately, even after Assad leaves," Obama said. "But we can begin the process of moving it in a better direction, and having a cohesive opposition is critical to that."
"I am very concerned about Syria becoming an enclave for extremism because extremists thrive in chaos," Obama said. "They don't have much to offer when it comes to actually building things, but they're very good about exploiting situations that are no longer functioning. They fill that gap."
Asked why the US is not more involved, Obama said: "I think it's fair to say that the United States often finds itself in a situation where if it goes in militarily, then it's criticised for going in militarily, and if it doesn't go in militarily, then people say, why aren't you doing something militarily?"
Smurfy layin the smack down.

The US isn't arming the rebels yet (that we know of), sending non-lethal but totally useful when combined with lethal aid, such as night vision goggles and body armour. Plus there were reports a long time ago that the US was training the opposition in neighbouring countries.
Its funny how facepunch flips total shit over syria now without even understanding a fraction of whats actually going on
omg dem rebels support assad
