People connected to the Russian government tried to hack election-related computer systems in 21 states, a Department of Homeland Security official testified Wednesday.
Samuel Liles, the Department of Homeland Security’s acting director of the Office of Intelligence and Analysis Cyber Division, said vote tallying mechanisms were unaffected, and the hackers appeared to be scanning for vulnerabilities — which Liles likened to walking down the street and looking at homes to see who might be inside.
But hackers successfully exploited a “small number” of networks, Liles said, likening the act to making it through a home’s front door.
Liles was testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is investigating Russia’s efforts to meddle in the 2016 presidential election, and his remarks add some clarity to the breadth of the Kremlin’s cyber mischief. Officials in Arizona and Illinois had previously confirmed that hackers targeted their voter registration system, though news reports suggested the Russian effort was much broader.
"It's not actually a big deal!"
People today seem to forget that we are very much still in a Cold War of sorts, Russia is still our arch nemesis, and we are both still actively trying to defeat and subvert each-other to this very day.

Like this is not surprising activity from them at all.

"Well the US did it to this one South American country six decades ago so it's clearly hypocritical for them to cry foul"
Now just wait for the usual suspects to tell there's nothing to worry about and everyone should ignore the issue until there's incontrovertible publicly available proof that Russia swayed the election results enough to change the winning candidate.
I remember all the voting booths going down all over the place during the election and thought it was the democrats to be honest. Turns out it was the old russkies!

Why would the Democrats sabotage an election they were sure they had a 100% chance of winning? Anyway machines going down is more realistically just faults due to old and poorly maintained machines. My state's voting machines are from the 1980's and would be easy to defraud because they do not provide a physical copy of the vote, and it is not possible to tell if a vote was tampered with due to how the votes are stored and what is on them.
Republicans are "deeply concerned" by this new development
and then proceed to do nothing about it because it benefits them
