Hopefully I won't get sued for copyright infringement.

A while back I made a thread along the lines of "What are the odds of getting caught with illegally downloaded stuff?"
Well, jinx. My dad texted me today "Do you use a program called bit torrent?"
I told him no, but that I used something similar.
He told me to delete it because Verizon had contacted him and told him that he might be breaking the law, etc etc.
I'm a bit scared because I don't know if he'll get sued and stuff. I deleted all of my p2p programs I have and I'm waiting 'til he comes home to see what happens.
I'll be going to work so I won't answer or anything but, I thought they went mostly after uploaders rather than small downloaders? Also I haven't used it in like a three weeks or so.
-- Edit --
It seems I'm fine but this is what I got caught for... something I didn't actually download. I'm thinking it could of been my sister, or her friend cause I don't download TV shows at 3 in the morning.

It's what you get for pirating honestly
Sure most people get away with it but it looks like you're gonna be one of the examples
EDIT: If you rate me disagree, you pirate all your games
EDIT2: wow there's a lot of pirates on FP
EDIT3: I bet everyone in this thread hates me now.

Looks like he was given a warning, this time.
Edit: Rated the above post disagree, but not because pirating is acceptable.
Your fault for using bit torrent without using a proxy / using torrent in general.
It's perfectly ok for legal stuff though.
Even if there's a small chance that you'll get caught, it's still a chance.
You could be screwed, buddy.
But if Verizon called him and said he "might" be breaking the law, chances are they're not completely sure that you've been using it. If you get rid of your programs and don't pirate anymore, you might be alright. Just don't count on anything.
Tell them to fuck right off. Torrents are just as useful for legal things as they are for illegal things.
It's like getting fined for owning a car because cars could be used to smuggle drugs over the border.
It's ISP bully scare tactics, don't listen to them.
I was honestly expecting less scary answers.
Bbl, work.

Do you sell your car every time someone says you may have been speeding?

This, ISPs won't do shit, I got an email like that from Comcast, just go get Utorrent, and turn on bit encryption.
Verizon called because they saw that you had been downloading mass amounts of data, not necessarily because what you were doing was illegal. Comcast used to call all the time warning me about shit and that it is illegal for me to use pirated software and blah blah blah. All my downloads were from gmod stuff and me getting tracks (that my band has the rights to) in order to test and simple mix them.

You'll be fine. I got the same thing from charter for downloading Photoshop CS4, Adobe Illustrator, and a bunch of music. They only caught me because I seeded the adobe torrent. So stop seeding for a while. They'll stop watching eventually.

I remember when my friend came to school flaunting his first warning letter from his ISP. Boy was he proud. MY Computer Science 2 teacher on the otherhand was dissapointed.
Here's what you do:
1. Open your computer case.
2. Remove the power and SATA or IDE cables from your hard drive.
3. Proceed to crush the drive with a hammer on a mat.
4. Dig a hole in the backyard where you will then place the crushed remains of the hard drive and refill the hole.

P2P programs can be used for legal purposes as well. Verizon is just saying that it could be a possibility that illegal acts were taking place.
You had a viable and very legal reason for using a torrenting application, don't worry about it. If they question you, tell them exactly why you were using it.
(You were the guy that asked if it was legal to torrent a copy of a game you already own, right?)
Dad - "Pack your bags son, we are making a run for it to Mexico"

Perfect example of a retarded dumbass.

I'd download a car if it were possible. Hell I'd download a shitload of materialistic things if I could. I'm not gonna lie. :v:

I would download the power to fuck every girl I wanted to.

Bit encryption? You got me interested. What does that do and how do I enable it?
Turn it on in Preferences.
By the way, it won't stop you from getting caught. Encryption only hides what it is you're specifically downloading, it doesn't hide the fact that you're using torrents.
Does a speeding ticket cost millions of dollars?

Ahaha in Saudi Arabia they don't care about piracy.
In downtown there's usually guys with tables layed out with a lot of copied DVDs, with everything from movies, music, games, programs, ebooks.
For an equivalent of 4 U.S. Dollars.
[editline]10:13PM[/editline]
But I'd never buy from them.
[editline]10:13PM[/editline]
I get my games off . . . steam . . .
[editline]10:13PM[/editline]
yeah

Woah, look at all of those disagree marks.

it's a slap on the wrist
just stop doing it

The question is, who WOULDN'T download a car if it was possible to do so?
You have a shitty ISP, monitoring your internet usage
Encrypt your torrents, both the connections and files. Tell them it's legal stuff, and if they keep harassing you, they can talk to your lawyer.
