Think about it. What does your body use for fuel? Food. but it breaks down cells in the food and such and end up giving you energy. [i] Hypothetically,[/i] could you use other sources of energy such as electricity or solar energy?

well you need nutrients from food and right now there are some nutrients that we get from food that we can't artificially reproduce.
and our body already uses sunlight to create vitamin D, I think.

This would be somewhat unpractical in the surgery aspect, but if only needed for one or two people, this could work.
This couldn't solve world hunger, too many surgeries.
And the economics of food companies could be a problem, but then again, eating could be a pleasure, if anything.

Only if you could convert the energy into usable proteins... but then you'd merely be synthesizing organic material [I]anyway[/I] and not really absorbing energy from, say, the sun.

Well it's not possible with our current laws of physics etc. (because even if you had a machine replicating the entire digestion process it would still need fuel unless it achieved infinite motion (impossible)).
But you can never tell, maybe one day in the future this will be possible.
