• MA Voters not Stupid -- Sales Tax remains at 6.25%

With 83% of districts reporting, 56% of Massachusetts voters have voted to not roll back the sales tax to 3%. If this happened, the state would lose upwards of 3.4 billion dollars of revenue. In the current state of things, this would have horrible implications for nearly every public service offered by the state. Many public schools would have had their already diminished funding cut, fire departments shut down, police lay-offs, &c. Luckily, the voters decided to not to reduce their own tax burden in order to prevent these things from happening. Here's how the ballot read:
This proposed law would reduce the state sales and use tax rates (which were 6.25% as of September 2009) to 3% as of January 1, 2011. It would make the same reduction in the rate used to determine the amount to be deposited with the state Commissioner of Revenue by non-resident building contractors as security for the payment of sales and use tax on tangible personal property used in carrying out their contracts. The proposed law provides that if the 3% rates would not produce enough revenues to satisfy any lawful pledge of sales and use tax revenues in connection with any bond, note, or other contractual obligation, then the rates would instead be reduced to the lowest level allowed by law. The proposed law would not affect the collection of moneys due the Commonwealth for sales, storage, use or other consumption of tangible personal property or services occurring before January 1, 2011.
At least your Sales tax is 6.25% and not 9.25% -__-
Ours is 7% in NJ
My state varies by county. It goes from I think 6% to 8% and nearly all school funding comes from it. If we had done that, the unthinkable options would have happened (cancel all sports, all extracurriculars, close overflow schools and further overcrowd the large schools, etc.). I'm glad that didn't happen to your state. By the way, what is your state? [editline]2nd November 2010[/editline] Oh, Massachusetts. I'd rate me bad reading if this was a couple of months ago.
Thank fucking God. Stimulus money was the only thing that saved my old high school from not laying off a ton of teachers a few years back, and it scares me to think about what would happen if this were to have passed. Hopefully we will get rid of the double tax on alcohol though... there's no need to pay two taxes for anything.
good 6.25% isn't even high
It's 13% here in Ontario.
6.25% is a really low sales tax. Here's a thought: fix your economy by bringing your taxes in line with the rest of the world
:irony: Raise taxes to improve the economy? You haven't taken economics yet have you?
Have you? Your country is broke, it's hemorrhaging money, and you're charging some of the lowest taxes in the industrialized world. Figure it out
:irony: Raise taxes to improve the economy? You haven't taken economics yet have you?
Raise taxes to fix the deficit. Either way, the money cycle continues.
:irony: Raise taxes to improve the economy? You haven't taken economics yet have you?
Well there would be more money for public services if you did.
:irony: Raise taxes to improve the economy? You haven't taken economics yet have you?
let me guess, you're someone who thinks reaganomics works?
He is called m4 sherman.
That's because everyone in Massachusetts come up to New Hampshire to buy their shit tax free
Well there would be more money for public services if you did.
Who cares about public services? I'm not poor or on food stamps, and I don't go to a public school, so why should I care? I say we just lower the taxes to about 1.5% across the United States, drop this "obamacare" plan, social security, welfare, etc, and let people work for their food, or die. It's the American way.
Are you high?
I do not do any hard drugs such as marijuana, crack, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, etc, so no, I am not high. God does not want us destroying our bodies with such things.

We need to have a government with no taxes, slavery back, and all the mooselimbs slawtered. Then we need to invent life giving machinery and resurrect Reagan and resume our place as lords of earth, praise Jebus.:911:
In our country, sales tax is 19% 19 FUCKING PERCENT And that's before they add more taxes to basically anything after you purchase something. In fact, the EU had to bar our government from making new taxes as we're at the fucking limit of taxes allowed. Oh, and they plan to raise it to 20% too.
there's a limit on taxes?

Just hope that the money doesn't get lost like over here in 'merica
