New to making dubstep; or anything for that matter, are there any tutorials you guys learned from that you remember?
Just remember to make your drums punchy, compressed snare and a ballsy tight kick. Half-time 140 bpm.
Dont let the basslines control your mix even though they are a big part of the song.

He is looking for tutorials, what you gave him is gibberish(to him)
Really, start out with experimenting, read the wikipedia entry on dubstep. Learn the basics of FL Studio.
Thanks.
Any more tips?
i would use the plugin massive. it has a steep learning curve if you're new to this sort of thing, but its great for dubstep. there are a lot of youtube tuts for this.
if you want to start simple, you can use wasp xt or 3xosc.
if you're using wasp xt, its pretty straightforward; turn the sustain knob all the way up, and for the wobble go into the lfo 1, highlight sync and filter, and experiment with the 'rate' and 'amount' knobs. the rest of it is sort of just adjusting and experimenting with the oscillators and stuff until you have a sound you like.
Do you have skype? I'd be happy to teach you some basic shit on there if you're willing to put in about an hour or two. Also, do you have Massive?

Only 140bpm? I would have figured Dubstep was about 180bpm or at max 210bpm?

thats drum and bass, which is typically around 174. dubstep is 138-142

Oh, that was what I was thinking of.
Your trackss don't always have to be made of pure "wobble" basslines, regular bass synths are just as good.

He is the reason I started producing.
Is there really a specific BPM range for dubstep? That's dumb.
Is there really a specific BPM range for dubstep? That's dumb.
No, it's just that most of the best dubstep is around 140 bpm

Genres have BPMs that are usual for them.
A lot of rock is 60(or 120) BPM.
what type of dubstep are you going for?

Isn't Ace of spades about 164BPM?
Isn't Ace of spades about 164BPM?
I'm talking about more classic rock.
Ace of Spades is more metal or something, right?

Oh sorry
Is there really a specific BPM range for dubstep? That's dumb.
how is it dumb? if you took your favourite dubstep track and slowed it down/sped it up it would sound like utter shit
can you imagine halftime 90bpm, it would be painfully slow
Genres have BPMs that are usual for them.

Well, there's a lot of rock that is 130-150 BPM and 100-110 BPM aswell.
Well, there's a lot of rock that is 130-150 BPM and 100-110 BPM aswell.
It's also a much broader genre than dubstep.

genre's aren't defined by ONLY the bpm you silly goose

Exactly.
dubstep is about sound and mood not bpm lol
dubstep is about sound and mood not bpm lol
...but bpm is incredibly important
...and dubstep can have lots of different sounds and moods

Tbh BPM doesn't matter at all, just like genres don't. As an example, flying lotus makes some pretty nice Dubstep influenced Hip Hop, some of it is like dubstep, but with 90 BPM. Works really well.
dubstep is about sound and mood not bpm lol
there seems to be a serious discrepency between people who think genres define the music and the other way round. dubstep is half time, 140bpm music (usually with wobble bass and other such features). Just because it's not dubstep doesn't mean it can't have dubstep features and be good...
