Source: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-27155859
The whole of Denmark has been recreated, to scale, within the virtual world of Minecraft. The whole country has been faithfully reproduced in the hugely popular title's building-block style by the Danish government. Danish residents are urged to "freely move around in Denmark" and "find your own residential area, to build and tear down". Around 50 million copies of Minecraft have been sold worldwide. Known as a "sandbox" game, the title allows players to exist in a virtual world, using building blocks to create everything from basic structures to entire worlds. Minecraft was launched in 2011 by independent Swedish developer Markus "Notch" Persson. The Danish government said the maps were created to be used as an educational tool - suggesting "virtual field trips" to hard-to-reach parts of the country. Flat roofs There are no specific goals to achieve other than continued survival. Recreating real-world locations is of particular interest for many players. Last year an intern working with the UK's Ordnance Survey team built geographically accurate landscapes covering 86,000 sq miles (224,000 sq km) of Britain. The Danish project is more ambitious however, with buildings and towns reproduced in more detail. The only difference, the team behind it said, was that all roofs were flat. It has also banned the use of one of the game's typical tools - dynamite. The full map download of Denmark will be available until 23 October.

It has also banned the use of one of the game's typical tools - dynamite.
Does the use of TNT count as an act of terrorism? :v:
Does the use of TNT count as an act of terrorism? :v:
It's a bit surprising for the Danish government to be encouraging people to tear down their own residential areas, anyway.
can someone put this in a dropbox dl or something? I can't figure out the website.
Will they employ virtual government workers to keep virtual Denmark safe from virtual violence?
-snip i'm gay-
copypasting my post from news node for people who are interested in the world
for people who want to join an online server of that, requires 1.7.2 to 1.7.5 version alternately you can download it here although I can't guide you through that as the interactive map doesn't load properly for me
ive always wanted to go to denmark
I wonder if Endermen will be public enemy #1 for terrorist activities (picking up blocks)?
snip never mind server was posted above
I've just spent the last 5 or so hours exploring, it's absolutely mind blowing how exact it can be at times. Even my fucking shed and a little hedge was there. [editline]27th April 2014[/editline]
copypasting my post from news node for people who are interested in the world
There's also the other three they made because of the amount of traffic. You also need to create a new profile and set it to use something between 1.7.2 and 1.7.5 for it to work. [editline]27th April 2014[/editline] If you want to explore Sjælland, join 54.72.59.93, then basically type /warp kbh unless you have better places in mind. That command will drop you close to Tivoli gardens and from there you can use google maps to navigate.
Anyone feel like recording this?
It appears that only Danish citizens can download this. Anyone care to upload this to a dropbox for those that can't into Danish?
Next do Russia
Next do Russia
Make the entire thing rainbow coloured, too.
"We didn't include Greenland or the Faroe Islands because we assumed that most people forgot that we own them anyway."
Neat

I thought Greenland was independent? I also forget that Denmark owns Faroe Islands
It appears that only Danish citizens can download this. Anyone care to upload this to a dropbox for those that can't into Danish?
It's 1 TB, so you're probably better off just playing on the servers
It appears that only Danish citizens can download this. [editline]27th April 2014[/editline]
I thought Greenland was independent? I also forget that Denmark owns Faroe Islands

Hjemmestyre Meaning "home rule", it indicates an autonomous administration (present in both in Greenland and the Faroe Islands) that has power over all internal affairs. In this arrangement, the Danish government deals only with external matters such as defence and foreign affairs. Greenland and the Faroe Islands maintain their own parliaments and governments, headed by a prime minister who appoints a cabinet. This is synonymous with "self-governing."
Yeah, we "own" them, but really as far as I'm concerned we're just paying some expenses and such. Not that I'm complaining, I think it's important to support them.

Not really surprised, since Minecraft is pretty much digital legos.
Is there legoland in this?
Is there legoland in this?
HOLY SHIT
Use the server until they release it other places or a torrent exists.
YOU WOULDN'T DOWNLOAD A COUNTRY
"Made by the danish government" isn't exactly accurate. It was made by a few guys from "Geodatastyrelsen", to test the quality of our maps and their translation into digital form.
I thought Greenland was independent? I also forget that Denmark owns Faroe Islands
They're both autonomous entities with their own governments, but both are still under Danish sovereignty.
YOU WOULDN'T DOWNLOAD A COUNTRY
Fuck you I would if I could
Hell yes. We did a poor, quick job of adding this sign. Pretty stupid but absolutely a necessity of governmental levels of importance.
