One of the most enticing "what-ifs" of recent years has come true: Microsoft has purchased Nokia's Devices and Services unit, it announced today. It unites Windows Phone 8 with its biggest hardware supporter, and gives the company an integrated solution across hardware and software. When the deal closes in the first quarter of 2014, Microsoft will pay 3.79 billion Euros for Nokia's business, plus another 1.65 billion Euros for its portfolio of patents. The 5.44 billion Euro total is considerably less than Microsoft paid for Skype in 2011. 2,000 people are expected to transfer from Nokia to Microsoft, including 18,300 that are "directly involved in manufacturing."

IT'S HAPPENING
My lumia is ready
[editline]3rd September 2013[/editline]
Also calling it now: Elop is the new Microsoft CEO
Whelp there goes all hope of an android lumia
[del]Watch the product quality remain shit.[/del]
Actually, I retract that because Nokia at least attempts to have a decent battery life.
Watch the product quality remain shit.
My Lumia 920 is pretty good :(
Watch the product quality remain shit.
I dare to say that the Lumia flagship phones are pretty much the best built smartphones currently on the market. Hardware wise that is.
Watch the product quality remain shit.
Confirmed for never using a Nokia phone ever.
Watch the product quality remain shit.
I own a product from them, and am quite satisfied.
Jesus Microsoft is really going nuclear.
Watch the product quality remain shit.
Nokia devices are beautifully built and also are resillient to tough conditions, they just run on a sucky OS
Nokia devices are beautifully built and also are resillient to tough conditions, they just run on a sucky OS
The OS is just fine, there's just no applications for it :/
Nokia devices are beautifully built and also are resillient to tough conditions, they just run on a sucky OS
Now they will forever be stuck to that OS and they lost Marko Ahtisaari, their main hardware designer.
RIP in pieces Nokia, Elop the Microsoft Trojan Horse did its job well.

I love the images in The Verge's comments
Honestly Nokia couldn't have a better outcome than this: Its mobile business was dying slowly, it was very late to the smartphone party, and it couldn't have possibly fought against Samsung's massive supply chain and marketing blitz, maybe if Nokia would have jumped into the Android party early on they could have proven themselves worthy competitors to Samsung, but they didn't and now I think they're in a somewhat comfortable position with WP.

Symbian was around before "smartphones", and in their prime Nokia had a better supply chain than even Samsung. What killed Nokia was their special relationship with Microsoft and their bullish behavior.
Once Microsoft bought Skype no carriers were going to play ball with them, especially in the US.
RIP Nokia, I'd kill for an up to date N900.
Sad really. I'm using Windows Phone and I really like it, but I'd really like Nokia to remain independent.
I met the old president of Nokia on the street in Helsinki after he got kicked out. This was when Nokia was completely shit.
The OS is just fine, there's just no applications for it :/
Welcome to what kept Linux from becoming popular for ages.
The Moor has done his duty, the Moor can go.
It's kind of sad because this means Nokia is basically dead now and only operating as a small services business
But at the same time all the big players at nokia are still doing their thing just under microsoft now
I just hope that this neo-Nokia can still remain "in charge" of their devices and that they don't get stepped on by MS going "oh we don't have enough budget for you to do X Y or Z or look to far into R&D"
Nokia was an awesome phone manufacturer because they really took charge of their devices and how they felt/worked/etc on the inside and out since their beginnings to now, and constantly trying to push the envelope in tech (like the camera on the 1020). It would be sad for them to basically lose that under microsoft.
[editline]3rd September 2013[/editline]
Also they are the only phone manufacturer I know of where their manuf. specific apps were actually really damn good, if not better than most other comparable stuff on other platforms. AKA I didn't want to immediately wipe them as soon as I turned the phone on

I can't see Microsoft totally ripping the company apart. The business is successful and whatever they were doing works. Expect a similar situation between Google and Motorola.

Now that Balmer is gone there is at least a little bit of hope that might happen, but I'm not optimistic that Microsoft won't just gut them.
Fuck
[editline]3rd September 2013[/editline]
Soon Scandinavian export will consist of only Angry Birds and shitty house artists
Elop should probably leave Nokia/Microsoft/whatever now.
Because when you're on a burning oil platform, you have to make a choice, to either burn to death in the flames or jump into the cold waters.
R.i.p.

Also you set fire to the oil platform and the police might want to ask a couple of questions.
Why was Nokia so stubborn to not use Android...Would love my E72 with android
yeah box me,but its true

Ballmer has confirmed (kind off) that Stephen Elop is a candidate for the new CEO of Microsoft. Elop seems like a good guy, and I don't think he'll just throw away what Nokia has done (and been doing) while he was CEO there.
Actually kinda hoping for Elop being the new CEO of Microsoft.
