The UK population grew by almost half a million last year to 64,596,800, official figures show.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates the number of people living in Britain in June 2014 was up 491,100 on the previous year.
Net migration added 259,700 to the population, while "natural growth" - births minus deaths - added 226,200.
The population increase was above average compared with rises over the last decade, the ONS said.
The ONS said the number of births in 2013 to mothers born outside the UK made up a quarter of the total babies born.
The figures also found that the number and proportion of older people in the UK continued to rise.
People really need to keep it in their pants.
The article lists Net migration, but that's Immigration minus Emigration so I imagine the real numbers for that end up higher.
I'm just waiting for "Lets kick them out back to their own country"

Which would be the UK for people who were born there.

The ONS says that emigration was around 300,000, so it was about double. Still doesn't really make a difference, though- it's not like the UK's population hasn't been in a continuous state of flux for millennia.

641k immigrants a year is some serious fucking numbers though. That's 2/3rds of the US immigration numbers.
With where the world is headed now is over population due to Peace and less wars. One of the first things that will happen is immigration will stop. Maybe even kicked out depending on the country. Who knows what happends after that. Im not for wars but we're slowly heading to purges and civil unrest.
So in this near future we better make some space for people or this era of peace and democracy will backfire by people themselves.

More Hungarians to the UK please your people are great
Dunkace should learn what exponential growth is before mentioning it..
Sure, it has a colloquial meaning, but when talking about populations it seems misleading.
Abortion is green folks
The UK is the most densely populated country in Europe, probably should have a birth cap at this rate. International migrants from the middle east\africa are a big problem to the population boom since on average they have 4+ kids whereas the national average for native brits is 1.6 kids.

When you grow up in less stable countries or feel insecure about your future, you tend to have more kids as there's a fair chance that one or more of them might die. I imagine it probably takes some time (a generation or so) for people to get used to the fact that that isn't necessary any more. The children and grandchildren etc of immigrants are always going to be more integrated because they'll have lived in this country for their whole life. A birth cap would be possible, but wouldn't it lead to the possibility of forced abortions or sterilisations as in China?
More americans in our country please.
you make me look smarter

China's birth cap was strict with just one child which caused many problems, to lower the population boom a cap of 3 children would be acceptable, 2 replacing the parents and then one for potential population growth.

I imagine they'd get around it somehow or there'd be some talk about it being a racist measure.

True. Thing is, while some people would argue that Eastern Europeans are "stealing our jerbs", in truth I feel that a fair few of the jobs being "stolen" are jobs that many young people feel "above", stuff like being a cleaner or a janitor, and in some cases it seems that Eastern Europeans tend to have a better work-ethic than some home-born British folk.
Hell, our current weekend chef is from Poland, and he's a pretty great cook with a good work-ethic, the latter of which I can't say for our previous week-day chef.
The scary part is actually that a quarter of children born were to mothers born outside of the UK. Would then be interesting to see how it's further seperated into mothers of non and of european descent. But still.
If immigration is such a massive problem just do what the US did and build a massive fence across the southern boarder to keep them out, surely that would work for the island of britain

The problem is, most of the parties that would have strict border control and the people in Britain in favour of it are often instantly branded racists and or fascists. .

Good god, that's fucking ridiculous
But what is our 641k/a when compared to Germany or France?
But what is our 641k/a when compared to Germany or France?
In Germany in 2013, it was apparently a gross figure 1.2 million people, with net migration at 437,000 people. In other words, it seems our problem isn't so much that people are arriving, but that they aren't leaving.

afaik the UK receives the highest number of immigrants in the EU
afaik the UK receives the highest number of immigrants in the EU
See above post. Perhaps per square km we do, but Germany received twice the amount of immigrants we received in 2013.

Wow.
Alright lobsterback, what makes you so special?

Per square km is quite an important unit though when we're comparing it to Germany. Whose country is rougly 5 times larger than ours yet we're at half of their immigration rate.
It's pretty bad that Germany is only receiving twice that, it means for a country our size we're taking in , proportionally, more than what is (I won't get into the ethics/politics of what we should) the norm for Europe.

What
Germany isn't even that much larger than the UK.
357,114km² vs 242,900km²
226 pop/km² vs 262 pop/km²
And we still get twice as much (luckily mostly skilled immigrants)
If immigration is such a massive problem just do what the US did and build a massive fence across the southern boarder to keep them out, surely that would work for the island of britain
You guys copied the Romans with Hadrian's Wall. Expect yours was just a bit bigger

Lucky you. Ours are more often than not, unskilled fucking halfwits.
