[QUOTE]Sports officials in northeast China have claimed the gold medal for incompetence after authorising the construction of a running track with right-angled corners.
The track was completed recently as part of a major refurbishment of a 100,000 sq ft stadium in Heilongjiang province’s Tonghe County.
The stadium itself appears to have been impressively built and features an immaculately laid artificial grass football pitch at its centre.
“It all looks jolly good - apart from the track which doesn’t really look up to standard,” a bemused local told Newsnight, a regional television programme.
Newsnight dispatched a correspondent to examine the track’s unconventional curvatures and shed some light on what had gone wrong.
“I felt a bit strange at the turn,” Li Xiao’ang, the reporter, said, after attempting his first onscreen lap.
Xiao Gong, a local woman, was also invited to take a run around the right angles.
“It was quite tricky taking the corner,” she told the reporter. ”It would be easy to fall.”
“It is strange indeed,” the woman mused, after abandoning her attempts to run on the track. “Normally curves speed people up but these corners slow you down. It is quite inconvenient.”
Zhang Ying, a resident interviewed by Newsnight, speculated the corners might have been designed “to prevent people from crashing into each other during races”. “Is it for anti-collision?” he asked.

I imagine someone's knee compound fracturing through their skin on a corner.
