A passenger plane has crashed after a failed emergency landing in Taiwan, killing more than 40 people, local officials say.
The domestic TransAsia Airways flight crashed near Magong airport on the outlying Penghu island, reports said.
There were a total of 54 passengers and four crew on board, Taiwan's CNA news agency reported.
Aviation officials said flight GE222 aborted its initial landing and then crashed, local media reported.
Fifty-one people were feared dead and seven were injured, CNA reported, citing fire department officials.
man this year is all about planes ain't it
and the flying paranoia only increases
I'm quite paranoid when the I'm in the plane.
But I often reflect on statistics to calm my nerves. After so many incidents this year, what are the chances there'll be another one? With me on board? Pretty slim.

im flying in 3 fucking weeks
Imagine how many planes fly every day. soooo many.
You an extremely higher change of being hit and killed by some random drunk driver in an SUV
sorry if I made you scared to be in cars now :(
Im flying in 1 month too

the way i see it, as long as you're not on a flight starting with 'MH' your chances are pretty good

At least in cars you have a chance to survive since you aren't plummeting towards the earth nose down. Unless you go off a cliff.
My mother is flying today
Here's hoping none of my Taiwanese relatives or friends were involved. Haven't heard any word yet.

There's a decent chance you can survive in a plummeting plane as well.
Also, the risk of being in a plummeting plane is too small in comparison.
What is it with South Asain airlines and crashing?

Actually I've read multiple times that the statistic for air travel related deaths vs cars is usually skewed as it's measured in deaths per X km traveled. When you find a statistic that measures deaths per hour of journey time, they're much closer.

Quit being babies you guys seriously, isolated incidents do not increase the overall likelihood of these events happening, learn to statistics.
Also, at this point last year there were 7 flying incidents leading to death or injury, to this years 5. Source

There's been quite a few heroic stories of pilots making emergency landings, like that one pilot a few years back who landed a plane in a river with everyone completely unharmed.

Please teach me your ways of maturity and superiority.

I dunno if you can really say that's a trend. Plenty of planes crash, and it's hardly Malaysian Airlines fault MH17 got shot the fuck down.

The thing I always like about cars too is that you're in control. You decide when to stop, when to rest, when to slow down or speed up, etc. And they don't fly tens of thousands of feet above the surface of the earth at hundreds of miles per hour.
I'll stick with cars and ships. I like planes, but only when I get to control them. When it comes to accidents, with cars I've got some manner of control, with ships it takes a long time generally for those hulking massive steel palaces to sink. With planes, it's over too quickly, and the odds of survival can go either way; usually, either everyone lives or they all die and there's no middle ground.
I would prefer a good chance at life and control over my own survival, thanks.

If you were always in control of everything around you, cars would be safe. But you can't and you can't control or predict that drunk asshole speeding through the red light and T-boning your safe driving ass. Im always worried in the back of my mind about dying to some reckless dumbshit despite me doing everything I can to safely get where I'm going.
And don't discredit pilots who have tens of thousands of flight hours, they still have a great amount of control if they're experienced pilots, as they should be: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Airways_Flight_1549
im taking a domestic flight in the US on saturday..
idk it puts me about 800 miles closer to ukraine and if u forget about the ocean separating us it could be bad, id imagine a rouge ukrainian missile could easily hit a plane over the midwest US. wish me luck

I'm okay with not being in control over every little thing though. I have control over myself, and that's good enough for me. I control where I go, when I go, and how I go. That's what's comforting about it. No, you can't control everything, but you can ensure that you at least are doing whatever you feel comfortable with and feel capable of. Anything beyond that is in the hands of fate anyway, so there's no sense in worrying about it.
Okay, my family is safe.

Sorry for your loss mate.
My question is why they thought it was a great idea to start flying when a Typhoon was still having effects on the region.
My question is why they thought it was a great idea to start flying when a Typhoon was still having effects on the region.
Especially with an ATR-72.
I remember reading an interview article with a Veteran 777 pilot and he was saying how that region has quite a surprising number of "Rambo" pilots who would fly their planes even in typhoon condition whereas he would push back his flight until the storm ends.

Wow you really are a cunt. That is is really going to help their paranoia isn't it.
