• Underweight models could go to prison under French proposals
The French National Assembly is considering a health reform bill that includes measures to ban designers and labels from using models deemed "too thin" by healthcare standards. They would then be subjected to periodic weigh-ins. Models who come in under weight would face fines of up to 75,000 euros, (£55,000) or even prison sentences. Jamie Gavin, founder and managing director of media agency inPress, has welcomed the proposals.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-32127681
I'm all about combating anorexia and bad weigh loss practices but this seems excessive.
French anorexia cure: €75k fine and a trip to the prison.
snip
Overweight models should get the same treatment, but we all know that is literally never going to happen in the history of ever.
Why are they fining the models themselves? That doesn't seem like a good solution
Ok ok hold up. So western society has and continues to make an unobtainable perfection for women, causing them to take up eating disorders to try to fit that perfect standard, then you want to punish them with a fucking enormous fine and jail time for wanting to be beautiful? Taking their money and sending them to jail doesnt fucking fix eating disorders, not to mention the fact that you are literally policing women's bodies and PUNISHING them if they don't fit ANOTHER perfect standard.
Don't fight the models. Fight the companies who encourage anorexia through using exclusively underweight models. Fight the beauty industry that profits from making people feel less good about themselves and their looks.

Let's throw them in jail and take away a large portion of their salary because they don't fit my impression of a perfect body!" Fuck off. Women shouldn't get that treatment AT ALL.
My best friend eats like a pig and weighs somewhere around 80 lbs. She's tried everything and can't gain weight. This won't solve any societal issues, it'll just punish people with a certain body type (as if we don't already do that enough).

Being overweight is arguably even less healthy than being underweight. That being said, this entire proposal is just plain dumb.
I dont understand why they'd use anorexic models, they're not attractive.

Overweight women and underweight women share basically the exact same hurdles in society, with a little twist. Underweight women are publically ridiculed for "Caring too much", and overweight women are publically ridiculed for "not caring enough". Neither categories are taken seriously or respected as human beings, as clearly evidenced. This isn't the first attempt to punish over/underweight women, it happens all the time inside businesses. It's just the first time that a government has attempted to do it.
that is a fucking disgusting proposal what manner of fiend would even consider this
If you're going to punish anybody for encouraging anorexia and other eating disorders in models, punish the fucking companies. It's like sentencing individual Germans for Nazi war crimes but not Himmler or something. Beyond about size 18, all of the 'plus size' models I've seen have been freelance.
Like, I get why they use models that are all the same size, designers work like crazy coming up to fashion shows anyway, if they had to make clothes for different sizes the workload would get ridiculous. But I don't understand why the standard size has to be so small.
Ship the fatties off so they can loose weight too.
dat victim blaming
it wont pass, there is no way.

It's not talking about fines or jail for anyone with an eating disorder, it only applies to models, people whose physical appearance is already tightly controlled by the industry they work in. Policing their bodies and holding them to high standards is already par for the course in modeling so it just seems like an odd criticism to raise. It seems like they're trying to cut off the problem at the source by making it much more difficult for advertisers to peddle those unrealistic body images in the first place. But with the widespread use of Photoshop, I don't see how it can really make a difference. They'll just use slightly heavier models and Photoshop them back to unattainable standards.
I think there are more pressing issues to be worrying about

Many, many, many models have eating disorders all but forced on them because of the aforementioned impossible standards. The industry is already a problem. The difference is here that now the models can be sent to prison and fined by the GOVERNMENT for doing what their employers tell them to do. Instead of the employers. I can't fathom how anyone could think that fining and jailing the models is the correct course of action. I said already that businesses and modeling agencies already police the bodies of women, but now it's government sponsored. There is zero sense or logical thought in this proposal. It's punishing models for following their agencies instructions.
French anorexia cure: €75k fine and a trip to the prison.
Fookin Monopoly bastards!
whoever proposed this seriously needs to get fucked
French anorexia cure: €75k fine and a trip to the prison.
Which in america would just make you even thinner because prisons here give the inmates just enough calories for the day
Ship the fatties off so they can loose weight too.
What makes you so important that you think that everyone who doesn't please your eye should be imprisoned?
Overweight models should get the same treatment, but we all know that is literally never going to happen in the history of ever.
Yeah, overweight models is such a problem in society.
Ignoring some of society's impressions on people, some people are naturally that skinny - its basically a middle finger to them.
As someone who has difficulty gaining enough weight naturally, being fined for being skinny would be an absolute nightmare.
The definition of a nanny state.
