US digital film business Netflix will this week launch an ad campaign and a string of new film and TV deals, provoking scramble for subscribers against rivals such as Amazon's LoveFilm.
Netflix is understood to be close to revealing streaming ventures with film and TV companies including Sony, Disney, Paramount, Channel 4 and ITV to boost the allure of its UK launch.
Netflix, which has announced a number of deals already has contracts with broadcasters and film studios – from the BBC, Miramax, Lionsgate, MGM – with titles including Pulp Fiction, Kick-Ass, Top Gear and Doctor Who, available to rent.
The company has revolutionised the way Americans watch films – Netflix notched up more than 20 million US subscribers since launching an online streaming service in 2007 – but it is set to have a much tougher time in the UK – facing rivals including Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB, Google-owned YouTube and Tesco's Blinkbox service.
In October Reed Hastings, the Netflix chief executive, warned investors of the scale of the task admitting that the venture is expected to take more than two years to achieve profitability in Britain, longer than in previous launch markets such as Canada.
Hastings' warning was responsible in part for the shares in the one-time internet darling plunging 27%.
"We'll know more after our first two quarters," he cautiously noted. The challenge is such that Netflix moved to completely halt its international expansion strategy until it could firmly establish an "aggressively priced, compelling service" in the UK.
Netflix's share price received a much-needed fillip last week when investors were buoyed by better-than-expected figures showing that it had surpassed 2bn hours of streamed content to its US subscribers in the fourth quarter.
Direct rival Lovefilm has attempted to contest Netflix's entry to the market by ramping up its streaming contracts.
Lovefilm has agreements with partners including ITV, BBC, Warner Bros, Entertainment One, Sony and Studio Canal for titles that include vampire franchise Twilight Saga, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Social Network.
The UK online TV and movie market – worth £11m five years ago – is booming and is expected to surge by 35% next year to £379m, according to Screen Digest.
You guys didn't have netflix?
Wow I never would have guessed that the UK didn't have Netflix. You guys have been missin' out.
One step closer to Europe, one step closer to movie nights with the boyfriend.
You guys will love it for the first few months.
I did, but then I ran out of things to watch. Their selection is too small. I log onto their website one or twice a month see what is new on there, but they are really slow to add to movies and shows. Most of the shows on there are missing the newest couple of seasons.
As long as you don't have a girlfriend that loves to come over and cuddle and watch it too much, you should be okay for a while. I'm pretty sure that's what ruined it for me.
UK does have lovefilm which is basically the same thing as Netflix.

The antichrist of movie rentals.

Lovefilm is great. Shame about the streaming quality though. What's Netflix's like?
We may not have Netflix, but we do have Lovefilm (which is a horrid service to say the least). Personally I've only heard bad things about netflix too.

Dude, you're missing out.

Poor you. Here, this may help:
Bu but we have sky as well...
A lot of the stuff looks like it's all American stuff
Not always a bad thing but Lovefilm has a bit of both
Oh actually scratch that, they do have stuff from the UK, just spotted the inbetweeners
I think they have a sky over in the USA too
Corporations own it. They give us permission to look at it.
1) Show me everything you have, and
2) Give me a trial that doesn't involve linking to facebook plz.
Wait, you do have MORE than this, right, Netflix?
Lovefilm is great. Shame about the streaming quality though. What's Netflix's like?
Netflix has 1080p on films that have it/corporations that allow it (Anything with the Starz Play logo would be SD since they are dumb and don't sell HD movie rights) and 5.1 Surround on films that have it.
I've been a big user for lovefilm for a while, and decided to trial this yesterday night. I can say I prefer this.
LoveFilm seems to have very shitty streaming bandwidth, even simple things like browsing whilst watching a movie will cause lovefilm to stutter and flip out. I can browse the web, watch a movie on netflix and my brother can play his 360 online and the movie doesn't stutter at all.
Lovefilm makes it very hard to unsubscribe, no matter how you try to cancel your membership you'll still end up on the phone with them trying to convince you otherwise. Netflix is simple, you click a few buttons online and your membership is cancelled.
Lovefilm also uses very crappy quality on all it's videos, Netflix allows HD and even their SD videos are of high quality.
Lets also not forget netflix lets you stream videos to mobile devices, or to devices such as a PS3 at HD resolution (I've not tested this yet).
It also appears that netflix will only buffer about 5-10 minutes of video ahead of your current watching point. I find this useful as a lot of users in the UK are on very limited bandwidth packages.

You don't need to link to facebook (at least I didn't) I just created an account, then logged in and it asked me if I wished to trial the service.

Huh, don't get that option. I'll try another browser.
Yeah, it fucks with you if you're signed in.
edit
And actually yes, the selection does indeed suck. It's tiny compared to Lovefilm. I'll give it a month and see how it goes.
A number of different companies have actually withdrawn their content from Netflix's selection, either taking them off of streaming or removing them all-together.
I would prefer they get through Canadas CRTC first so we had a better selection then river monsters and 7 different Land before times
Anybody who says Netflix is shit doesn't have it or a girlfriend to cuddle up with.
Awesome, although there doesn't seem to be much on there. Either that or i haven't got to the full selection.
I can't see any of the shows it has on the front page when i go to browse selection.
Oh shit, £5.99 p/m too, I'm fucking interested at that price
Anybody who says Netflix is shit doesn't have it or a girlfriend to cuddle up with.
All of their selection is either crap, stuff that's old enough to buy on DVD for under £6 anyway, or being shown as reruns on TV, and their streaming is slow as shit for me for some reason, it loads slower than it plays.
Holy shit Brazil finally got something earlier? It's been here for like, 2 months by now, I guess. We even got dubbed movies!
I'm currently watching Dr. Who, Breaking Bad and such, I love it.
Anybody who says Netflix is shit doesn't have it or a girlfriend to cuddle up with.
I have video on demand that is far cheaper, and has a much larger selection than Netflix; all without a silly monthly fee.

I'm more of a fan of the subscription model, pay once for the month, watch all that you want.

quality isn't all that bad, even has some HD movies

although I wish the canadian netflix had a better selection
