CAIRO — Most Egyptian journalists have had to watch their tongues and tone down their reporting over the past three years to keep their jobs under a military-dominated government. Now, the state is ordering some women working as television anchors to practice a similar restraint with their weight.

Earlier this week, Safaa Hegazy, the director of state-run Egyptian radio and television, barred eight anchorwomen from appearing on the air for a month, saying they were overweight, the state-owned Al-Ahram news website confirmed. Ms. Hegazy ordered the women to go on a diet during their suspensions, Al-Ahram said.

Khadija Khatab, one of the eight anchorwomen, said that she had not yet been formally notified of Ms. Hegazy’s order, but added that she was recently told that “measures will be taken against” those who fail to lose weight by mid-September, according to an interview she gave to a privately owned television station.
Seems like a mad shitty move, imo. I don't see how being overweight disables your ability to be a news anchor.
Presentation is part of the job

It doesn't. This is just a symptom of the wonderful muslim message of misogyny.

this is a terrible move and I highly contest it, but

can we go a single thread without starting this, please

I mean, if you actually read the article, you would know other women as well were also taking part in insulting these 8 anchors.
Alaa el-Sadani, a commentator for Al-Ahram, said that she was “sickened by the disgusting and repulsive” appearance of the eight suspended anchors, and that she believed the rest of the country agreed with her.
surprise surprise, a messy revolution that installed a military government is incapable and not that wise at all.
this seems to be a move get more people to watch the "state" sponsored news, which apparently everyone avoids since they know its just propaganda
Viewership of state television, long dismissed by many Egyptians as a comically biased news source, fell significantly after the uprising that removed President Hosni Mubarak from power in 2011.
“They don’t understand that people don’t watch them because they have no credibility, skills or quality,” said Mostafa Shawky, a free-press advocate with the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression. “It has nothing to do with looks. But it goes to show that actual skill is not something they care about.”
Do you think women can't be misogynists, or that those who participated aren't muslims?
I get that you want to avoid toxic dialogue here, I respect that. But let's be honest, in what sort of country can you propose to gain viewership by blatantly degrading women? Would it get them the same result if they told male anchors who were overweight to put down the fork? I don't think so.
The fact is that if they are competent and not COMPLETELY REPUGNANT they have no reason to have lost their jobs
The fact is that if they are competent and not COMPLETELY REPUGNANT they have no reason to have lost their jobs
Different places have different standards. I'm not quite sure this is even newsworthy, as the second post in the thread says, presentation is part of the job.
an example of one said anchors

yeah she's pretty fat I gotta say but uh
So????????
“measures will be taken against” those who fail to lose weight by mid-September
... that means mid-September next year, right? Because nobody loses any noticable amount of weight in just 2 weeks. She knows that, right...?
I guess unlawful termination isn't a thing there.
Presentation is part of the job
You can present news just fine without being a super model.
As bad as this sounds, how many fat American news anchors have you honestly seen? Or most other countries for that matter.
You can present news just fine without being a super model.
And then there's the counter argument that takes it to the extreme. It was only a matter of time until fat acceptance arguments would come out. It's not about being a super model, it's just about looking healthy and in shape.

Also this. You could probably give a few examples, but those are the vast minority.

Oh so you're saying it's impossible to be healthy (what is your definition of health by the way, then?) and chubby/fat/overweight at the same time? Who's to say your average person in a fit body isn't gobbling down tons of unhealthy shit every single day but stays in shape? Is that heatlhy?
Being fat doesn't encourage other people to get fat. If it does - then fucking hell I wonder how you even function as a person. Seeing another one smoke? Welp I guess I better get some fucking cigs and smoke myself to death then.

Has nothing to do with fat acceptance (which I think is stupid) and everything to do with the fact it shouldn't matter. Its a freakin' news anchor job, who cares. As long as they look presentable and don't walk onto the screen in sweatpants it should be fine.
Also you're welcome to explain how the hell being a TV anchor relates to how much you weigh.
You can still look stellar as fuck if you're chubby, fat, overweight?

If you think that showing more fat people somehow equals to more people getting fat - then how come more fit people being represented on TV, commercials, in media overall isn't helping overall obesity? Since representing a "healthy body" is so important.
Why does everything have to be so black and white? You're putting words in my mouth. I'm just saying that a news anchor is a prolific position, so you want someone presentable as the face of the news.

But I'm trying to argue with you on the idea that being overweight = not presentable. That's a sick assumption imo. It doesn't help anyone and particular not overweight people being scuffed/hidden away because they don't try to have a body you think they should have.

Being fat still doesn't stop you from being a fucking news anchor.
Sad way of looking at it. Is a TV news production company supposed to deliver news that people to watch or show "presentable" people according to your body ideals in order for us to watch it?
If someone is a killer at delivering news but is fat, should we just go fuck it and hire someone else who looks like the kardashians? Why the hell?
It's not about being a super model, it's just about looking healthy and in shape.
As long as they're not bursting out of their clothes or constantly out of breath and unable to read the teleprompter, it's irrelevant what shape they're in.
Unless you're talking out of your ass then it doesn't matter how big it is.

Here comes the fat acceptance argument.

And here comes misrepresenting my words to the extreme.
Yes, you can be health and overweight but those are the minority. No, being fat doesn't hinder your ability to present news, but it does turn off viewers and makes the channel look bad.
Unless you're talking out of your ass then it doesn't matter how big it is.
Given the choice between an overweight and normal person, which are you more to watch, skill being equal?
Given the choice between an overweight and normal person, which are you more to watch, skill being equal?
That depends why I'm watching.
If I'm watching news, I'm watching it for the frigging news. The anchor has to be articulate and have a pleasant voice to present the news to me in a clear and easy to understand way. It doesn't really matter what they look like and they'll be mostly showing some kind of footage anyway.
If I was watching a lapdance then yeah I'd rather have a skinny blonde with big tits and good ass do it.
It all depends what you're trying to get out of watching the news. If you're watching the news to look at hot chicks then I suggest looking somewhere else might be more efficient to fulfill your needs.
Given the choice between an overweight and normal person, which are you more to watch, skill being equal?
You could use this weak argument about anything. Who would you rather wait on you at a restaurant? Who would you rather be your cashier? Of course its a bonus if it happens to be someone cute, but at the end of the day, you just want what you came for.
There's really not much more I can say if by saying overweight people make for unattractive presenters, I must be looking for super hot, super model chicks. There is no middle ground between the two.
That's all subjective about what you find unattractive. Attractiveness based on someone else's opinion, however, shouldn't dictate on someone holding a job like this or not.
There's really not much more I can say if by saying overweight people make for unattractive presenters, I must be looking for super hot, super model chicks. There is no middle ground between the two.
This is not my argument at all.
If you are watching the news for the news, it doesn't matter who's presenting them as long as he's good at his job. Because it's the news you care about.
The looks of the presenter would be important if that would be what you came for.
Egypt should've just done what the US does and fired them for totally unrelated incidents a couple months apart and they wouldn't have any controversy.
But yeah, this is pretty gross - I get professionalism and whatnot, but if they're capable newscasters who are performing their job well, there's no justification for firing them. If they're performing their job poorly, fire them for that instead of saying "fatty" and kicking them out the door.

you can be overweight and still be healthy, but no I can't wait to see all the concern trolling that going to happen
