The original Starcrat was released some 12 years ago and has become one of the most popular PC titles ever, selling over 11 million units to date. The first entry in the game's sequel, following years of fan anticipation, arrives in two weeks bearing an unprecedented budget.
According to the Wall Street Journal Activision Blizzard has spent over $100 million on the three-part sequel to the science-fiction real-time strategy game, which kicks off with Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty on July 27.
The report stated the $100 million was purely development price and made no mention of marketing expenditures. That lofty figure well exceeds Gran Turismo 5's $60 million development cost, one of the most expensive video games to date.
Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has previously labeled the Starcraft franchise as one of the company's seven "pillars of opportunity." Kotick said each pillar has the potential to reap between $500 million and $1 billion of operating profit for the publisher throughout its life. The other pillars are Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, World of Warcraft, Diablo, new Blizzard MMOG, and Bungie's new intellectual property.
Kotick wasn't the only Activision Blizzard executive speaking about the game though. Blizzard president Mike Morhaime told the paper that the publisher should be able to migrate some of its World of Warcraft subscribers to Starcraft II.
"We've brought in a lot of new players in the beta testing who've been playing World of Warcraft but have never tried Starcraft," Morhaime said.
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/starcraft2/news.html?sid=6269369&om_act=convert&om_clk=newsfeatures&tag=newsfeatures%3Btitle%3B2
Seems a bit absurd but considering Starcraft is still selling copies 12 years later for $20 it makes sense.
Also the newest trailer if you haven't seen it yet.

and i bet it will be money well spent
How the fuck could it possibly cost 100 million to make?
They fucking got the community to beta test it for free, and there's nothing overly spectacular in terms of graphics.
Stories are easy to make.
Holy shit that's some serious amount money.
yeah right

a team of people (god knows how many people are on the SC2 team) that require an hourly wage to live their lives isn't cheap.

Think of it as a a movie
I bet they use the money to make astral research for the game. Because when the bill arrives, they can climb all the way up to the moon with it. :mmmsmug:
holy shit.
that's all I have to say.
Hopefully the final quality will reflect this.
GTA IV cost about $100M to make.

blizzard has 4,600 employees, i'd say maybe 1/5th of those work on Starcraft (The rest being Wow, Diablo and customer support/maintenance). They all would have wages of $50,000+ per year. You can probably guess why that's expensive :v:

It costs one hundred thousand dollars to develop this game for twelve seconds

Something somewhere makes more than that
Considering they announced it what, three years ago? I can't say I'd be surprised with the amount of people probably working on it. If the beta is any reflection of how it will play online, it'll be a damn good game and I have no idea how the single player will be.

Oh they could've, I don't know, actually put time and effort into the game?
From the cinematics I have seen it looks as though it is being put to use.
