Wearing a headphone is recommended!
It's pretty amazing what a sound card from 90s is capable of. Especially the 3dfx Glide mode.
Sounds great with A3D, shame sound in videogames has regressed since those days.
I'd love to get an old machine like this just to play older games on it. Feels more genuine in a way.
I remember when i first played Doom with just the arrow keys and CTRL button. Nowadays, i can't imagine playing Doom without the mouse.
I don't get what the difference is supposed to be, it sounds like normal HL1. I'm using a G35 with the surround sound off.
Playing games with virtual 7.1 surround sound, which is what G35 has, sounds way better than this.
too bad virtual surround "7.1" doesn't actually have a difference
too bad virtual surround "7.1" doesn't actually have a difference
It does make a difference even when you're listening to non-surround sound content. It makes it sound like it's coming from external speakers.

to be fair, with a modern GPU you can go into nvidia inspector and just run it at 32x AA with AO and 4x DSR and a bunch of silly bullshit :v:
even at 1080, enough AA basically makes even ut99 look razor sharp

I've had a g35/7.1 headset myself
open air headphones blow it out of the water any day

Keep in mind that G35 isn't super high-end and you can get it on sale for like $60.
It still sounds very good and closed headphones have good bass. Coupled with the fact that you can make it sound externalized with its virtual surround, you get a pretty good headset.
People actually use the G35's surround?
I can't stand the whole 'Dolby surround headphones' thing, it sounds so shitty to me. I hate the reverb effect it adds.
Honestly, in my experience, I get much better surround audio out of a decent, basic HRTF implementation (and profile) than I do with CMSS-3D or Dolby Headphone (which I'm aware are HRTF implementations, but tend to overcomplicate with a simulated sound-stage) or whatever Razer's Surround thing is called.

I just remember the right speaker vibrating like mad inside the piece whenever bass happened and the left not sounding as good as other headphones out there even though it took it well. I bought open air headphones and because of how the backing on it works it sounded completely untarnished.
of/c I do still use closed ones for other stuff, both are pretty great. If you want headphones to actually sound "EXTERNALIZED" (I don't even know what the point of that would be??? or what that actually means) you should probably try open ones, rather than bothering with bad software and buzzwords (that being said I absolutely do love Logitech)
you have two ears. I'm pretty sure they have only 2 speakers in them, too, it's pure software. Any decent part of surround headphones will do the same, if not better. that plus 'gaming' keyboards and headphones all suck pretty terribly.
the entire idea around the marketing is if you make it sound like it's advanced it's "better". Literally all it does is make it far shittier. Headsets are bad enough alone no less.

Most of the time I tell people don't buy this shit man it's bad. The other dude asks WHY MAN IT SAYS FOR GAMERS MAN ITS GONNA BE FOR ME . Then they tell me how it broke afte 1-2 weeks. Never buy products with gamer written on it.

I was blown away after I bought myself some basic JVC headphones and enabled OpenAL's HRTF settings in my games

Not all "gamer" hardware is bad, though. Just a good chunk of it. "Gaming" headsets are almost universally bad because they both compromise in-game audio (because most people don't know any better, making the experience out-of-game terrible) and microphone audio (because most games with built-in voice chat compress it significantly in the interest of bandwith). However, there are many peripherals that, so long as they are sensible, are both well-made and have that silly "gaming" tag on it. High-end mice from Razer & Logitech are phenomenal, but light-up mousepads are not.
Don't discount something because of its marketing, look into the product itself and see if it's worth your time.

I still have this PC to play DOOM 2 on Floppys. It has some sort of built in speakers that play really low quality sounds, its pretty great.
It sounds like this and the sound comes from the PC.

Good advice mate and I agree. I would only buy a mechanical keyboard though. I don't trust headphones, power supplies etc. My hardware never had gamer on it or anything such as my motherboard and I never had problems with my hardware and I notice most people who buy it because someone in a store suggested or because gaming have frequent problems. Always good to check reviews in forums and ask people who bought the stuff.
or don't get headphones at all and get a real 5.1 surround setup
They really need to bring the sound quality back to the source engine. Hopefully Source 2 is a huge improvement.

Hopefully one day.

when you have two monitors and not enough room?
headphones are better than speakers anyways. Less sound foam to worry about and direct sound

Pretty much sums up "Gamer gear"
people think "GAMER GRADE GEAR" is somehow magically "Top of the line" but if you wanted a top of the line keyboard, you'd get one for programmers or typing even if it was bought to play a game with. If you wanted top of the line headphones you'd get something of actual quality.
Now that I'm thinking about it, Half Life has some of the better sound design I've seen in a game. It's a shame more devs don't pay attention to stuff like that.

headphones are better compared to low end speakers, sure. but they can not touch the quality of good high end monitors.

I might be exaggerating a bit but that fucking impressed the hell out of me. Sure I know its a demo so it is supposed to showcase the best case scenarios and is designed to impress, but I don't think I've listened to something so immersive in games in a long time.
I usually end up not even wearing my headphones in games and just keep them on my neck because there really isn't any point. But this is golden.

Considering the whole legal shit going on with that, I wonder if we'll ever be able to get anything like this at all at some point in the nearish future.
Sounds great with A3D, shame sound in videogames has regressed since those days.
I wouldn't say they've "regressed" but I get what you mean. Half life 2 is another good example... I haven't seen another game come close to the level of facial animation that it had (Except maybe L.A. Noire, but that's sorta cheating)
I remember when i first played Doom with just the arrow keys and CTRL button. Nowadays, i can't imagine playing Doom without the mouse.
Doom didnt have vertical aiming, just horizontal
That means you dont actually need the mouse
Arrow keys = Control character + aiming and ctrl = shoot
You just had to aim the gun near the enemy w/o needing to "actualy aim" because you get tons of ammo. Just spam the fire key
I remember my Sound Blaster X-Fi had a crystallizer option that when turned on, made everything sound super fucking awesome

Well, maybe.
[editline]17th December 2015[/editline]
This demo is acoustics only though. There are other demos out there that feature some other things, and not just with this system.
Even back then half-life 1 only had a two second loading screen.
did anyone else just get a huge wave of nostalgia with the Sierra opening music and old WON half life screen?
Not going to lie, miss that so much.
