This movie is about the battle of Guadacanal, although the characters are fictional. It starts off by connecting you with one of the many main characters, and shows how nervous everybody is about an invasion. When the battle starts, it is hell, but they pull through. Personally, I think this is a masterpiece. It is a very star studded cast, and most of them don't even have big parts.
Cast
James Caviezel as Pvt. Witt
Sean Penn as 1st Sgt. Welsh
Adrien Brody as Cpl. Fife
Ben Chaplin as Pvt. Bell
George Clooney as Capt. Bosche
John Cusack as Capt. Gaff
Woody Harrelson as Sgt. Keck
Elias Koteas as Capt. Staros
Nick Nolte as Lt. Col. Tall
John C. Reilly as Sgt. Storm
John Travolta as Brig. Gen. Quintard
Thomas Jane as Pvt. Ash
Jared Leto as 2nd. Lt. Whyte
Dash Mihok as Pfc. Doll
Tim Blake Nelson as Pvt. Tills
John Savage as Sgt. McCron
Nick Stahl as Pfc. Beade
Miranda Otto as Marty Bell
The music was composed by Hans Zimmer, a very good composer.
The movie came out in 1998, even though it came out after Saving Private Ryan, it is still on the same level as it. It doesn't seem to try to lead off of SPR's popularity.

The Thin Red Line is a 1998 war film which tells a fictional story of United States forces during the Battle of Guadalcanal in World War II focusing on the men in C Company, and in particular, those soldiers played by Jim Caviezel, Nick Nolte, and Ben Chaplin.
The film which marked director Terrence Malick's return to filmmaking after a twenty year absence, was written by Malick, based on the novel by James Jones, and features a large ensemble cast, including performances and cameos by several notable actors including Sean Penn, Adrien Brody, George Clooney, John Cusack, and John Travolta. Reportedly, the first assembled cut took seven months to edit and ran five hours. By the final cut, all footage of the performances by Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Sheen, Gary Oldman, Bill Pullman, Lukas Haas, Viggo Mortensen and Mickey Rourke had been removed. The film was scored by Hans Zimmer and shot by John Toll.
While not successful at the North American box office, the film was a moderate commercial success worldwide, grossing $98 million against its $52 million budget. Critical response was generally strong and the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score and Best in Sound Mixing. It won the top prize at the 1999 Berlin International Film Festival. Martin Scorsese ranked it as his second favorite film of the 1990s on At the Movies. Gene Siskel called it "the greatest contemporary war film I've seen."
hans zimmer! :3:
Fantastic movie, probably my favourite right after Platoon! Oh yes the music by Hans Zimmer is amazing.
Me and my dad use to watch this all the time when I was younger. God! It was such a orgasmic movie! Really good!
I thought this film was awesome, I watched it the first time about 2 weeks ago.
Definitely in the top 10 greatest war film category ever made.
Hell yeah, I love this movie. I might watch it again now.
Damn, I watched the trailer and I recognized Woody Harrelson's voice as soon as he spoke.
Seems like ever since I watched "Natural Born Killers" he's been everywhere ( And that accent is so recognizable ).
Great film. Nick Nolte should have the academy award.
It came out 12 years ago.
Need to watch it again. I've "seen" it but never experienced the full thing.
I just recently watched this movie and its one of the best war movies i've seen.

It was playing during the village attack/slaughter; the saddest scene in the movie. It was just fantastic
How is it sad? They charged a village.
Saddest part is when [sp] Pvt. Witt dies. [/sp]
I have not seen this film in ages. The only thing I actually remember is a guy accidentally pulls the pin of one of his grenades and ends up blowing off his ass.
Yea, thats how Woody Harrelson dies.
He didn't deserve it, I thought it was sort of out of place.
I heard the HL2 .357 sound at 1:00, well it sounded like it.
