Microsoft's "Scroogled" Campaign is Working, according to ad effectiveness firms
The Scroogled ads, negative to the core, are a rarity for consumer tech. Even the mean-spirited "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" variety featured a product comparison at least. But while the tactics may be ugly, the ads are working, according to two ad effectiveness firms, and research commissioned by Microsoft, which finds the ads are tarnishing Google's image in the eyes of viewers and putting Microsoft products -- including underdogs such as Bing -- into the consideration set.

"For Microsoft it's a win," said Jonathan Symonds, exec VP-marketing at Ace Metrix, an ad-effectiveness research firm. In Ace's evaluation, more than 53% of campaign viewers mention Google in their responses to the ads said they would look at Bing in a new light or at least seek more information. With Bing trailing Google search more than 50 percentage points at the start of the campaign, Mr. Symonds said just getting people to consider Bing over Google was a victory for Microsoft. "Microsoft will happily accept these outcomes."
Outlook looks pretty nice from what I've seen, but I don't need another email account.

You actually link your email account to a "Microsoft" account. My gmail is linked to my outlook, so essentially you don't need to make a new mail.
Wait wait wait, they're bashing Google for invasive ads?
Admittedly they're annoying, but if you use any browser that isn't Microsoft's, you can just adblock them. Can't do that on an XBox.

I'm already using a client, I don't think signing up for Outlook would really do me any good.
This ad campaign is pretty terrible really, Microsoft isn't exactly a "model citizen" at the best of times.

According to an ad research firm that specializes in this, it's not quite so terrible.
it's not terrible at swaying stupid people which is about the easiest thing you can do
in terms of actual intelligent points against Google services it's worthless
Fuck off, Microsoft. No one wants what you're peddling.

Ugh, the switchover from their old email UI to the current one was the worst. Outlook is cancer. I'd stay away from it.

It doesn't accept passwords longer than 16 characters, its android app is terrible (still working off gingerbread design specs) that drains battery faster than browsing facepunch on mobile and to my knowledge there is no method to add a secondary authenticator to logins from unknown locations.
I use outlook primarily now since I upgraded to Windows 8. All my separate accounts (personal, work, school) land in my outlook account, and I don't have to open a browser to get to it, I just click the mail icon on the start screen.

Imo, if you're using Android, you should stick to Gmail for the best experience. I have a Windows Phone, so I use Outlook primarily.
I mean, Microsoft would be making good points against Google for data gathering if they were not doing it themselves.

Every tech company is scroogling us in some way.
I just used that term seriously. Shoot me.
kinda funny how your av is of one of the brohoster art assets
I'm not seeing what you're trying to go at there by mentioning Brohoster assets as his avatar against his argument. Besides, Brohoster's been irrelevant for years (Apart from the little revelation that JWJ was a pedophile, which would actually be relevant to LethalDrive instead TBH) ever since Mr. Highly Illegal took over and ran it into the ground.
I only have to use Outlook because my school bases their email system off of it, and I hate it. Always gives me problems. And forget trying to get it on my phone.

...Or you could use Thunderbird which doesn't need you to do any account linking nonsense.

I use gmail for everything. My parents both use outlook and have TF101's which has a bug in the firmware that causes the default email client to not sync with microsoft accounts properly. My parent's "solution" was to download the official app and go through there.
Needless to say, I'm constantly harassed by them as to how ugly it is, why their phones keep dying after two hours (I have no idea why they insist on using the app on their phones) by the voicemail and texts they send me.
Despite making sure all their personal business cards say "...@gmail.com", their outlook accounts all forward to their gmail accounts and the "reply-to" address is also their gmail address going on three years now, they really don't have any reason to be using that stupid app.

Thunderbird is discontinued.
Thunderbird is discontinued.
No it isn't. And even you wanted to avoid Thunderbird for whatever reason there's still Evolution, KMail, Geary etc.

Afaik a lot of people don't even consider the top "result" to be an ad even if it's marked as such.
In a previous study a lot of people were surprised that they existed despite using the site very often.
This campaign probably has a similar effect.
"We'll pay you to tell us what we want to hear!"
For research into things like advert effectiveness, the company is going to want to know the absolute truth imo; no sense wasting millions, possibly billions, on just a warm feeling when they could make even more money with actually effective ads.
For things like product safety, then it's more a case of them not wanting bad news as they can use the research to prop up the product rather than going back to scratch.
Microsoft, Google, Apple, whatever. While using any of their services you are handing your personal information to advertisers and spies.
Google violates your privacy by reading every single word of every single email sent to and from Gmail accounts so they can better target you with ads.
Didn't Google themselves say something about it not actually being private?
Hah, I'm using a blocklist that only permits non-intrusive or not-misleading text adverts.
Because those I can easily ignore myself.

So you're gonna enjoy a free email service and block the ads that let google get any return from it, nice.
If I remember right the ad campaigns were talking about google's bots skimming through your email for keywords and showing relevant ads.

And the majority of people in the world think the only alternative to Windows is Mac, because they think Windows is the computer.
Not knowing another way exists /= liking what is currently there.
