AUSSIES may need to think twice next time they go to download the latest Game of Thrones episode or the hottest new Hollywood blockbuster. Monday’s season-four finale of the must-watch fantasy drama became the most-pirated program in history, with 1.5 million people worldwide downloading it illegally within 12 hours of its US screening. It is expected to attract 7.5 million illegal downloads worldwide in coming days. Australia is the worst offender in the world when it comes to online piracy and the Federal Government has plans to crack down on the practice. Although the government is tight-lipped on exactly what measures it will pursue, Attorney-General George Brandis says he is considering “legal incentives” for internet service providers to co-operate with copyright owners to prevent illegal sharing. That means it could become your internet provider’s legal responsibility to try to prevent you downloading illegally, whereas currently they have no such responsibility. ISPs could then introduce a so-called graduated response scheme, which means repeat offenders could be hit with formal warnings. When Game of Thrones’ fourth season premiered in April, more Australians illegally downloaded the program than any other nationality worldwide. Australia accounted for 11.6 per cent of the piracy and Melbourne was the worst-offending city on the globe, according to TorrentFreak. Mr Brandis expressed his concern to a senate estimates committee that “the legitimate rights and interests of rights holders and content creators are being compromised”.
For more information, just visit this source: http://www.news.com.au/technology/online/attorneygeneral-george-brandis-set-to-crack-down-on-illegal-downloading-of-show-such-as-game-of-thrones/story-fnjwneld-1226960063776
Meh. Your fault for releasing things months after everywhere else gets it.
With the internet, people won't want to wait eight months for something to come out on fucking cable when everyones talking about it around the world. How about you release it online at the same time, HBO go style? Eh? Eh?
It's their fucking fault for not offering a convenient service Piracy is a direct product of inconvenient service. To beat piracy, you have to offer a better alternative. People will always find workarounds, no matter how you try to police it.
Mr Brandis expressed his concern to a senate estimates committee that “the legitimate rights and interests of rights holders and content creators are being compromised”.
Not being compromised when they don't fucking exist in your country yet.
People should never resort to illegally accessing such content. But saying that, why are they? Why are movies and TV shows released at different times (in real terms) in different parts of the world? Why can't Australians get access to services such as Netflix? Why is it that the only choice to view this stuff on release is through Foxtel? All that George Brandis is doing is protecting the rights of rights holders to shoot themselves in the foot.
how in the rats arse are you going to "track down" anything. Since the invention of "recording video", there is literally no way you can track down recorded material without scanning every single frame of video that is transferred on the net.
I can watch it for free on cable at the same time it airs in the US and I still pirate it because it's so much better experience. I can watch it alone, pause it, there's better subtitles and i prefer my monitor over the tv etc.
Each episode of Game of Thrones season four has attracted about 525,000 viewers for Foxtel, including repeats, but an equal number of people download each episode illegally every week. The pay TV provider has branded illegal downloaders as “thieves” and made representations to both sides of politics about the issue for several years.
If foxtel wasn't such a fucking rip off people wouldn't have to boycott it illegally.
If foxtel wasn't such a fucking rip off people wouldn't have to boycott it illegally.
Seriously. Restrict it to a single service and it has less viewers. Syndication has proven this.
Seriously. Restrict it to a single service and it has less viewers. Syndication has proven this.
They offered a $35 a month subscription to view it and they think that is reasonable.
“It [foxtel] expects people to pay for a whole range of products when they may want (just) one. You’re getting Real Housewives of every city, rather than just Game of Thrones, which you want,” Choice’s Erin Turner told the ABC. Foxtel hit back at this claim, saying it fast-tracked the program, offered flexible ways to enjoy it and offered low-cost options such as the special Games of Thrones subscription for $35 a month.
The attorney general can fuck off, The reason piracy is so big here is cause games cost a metric fuckton and we can't get netflix or any alternatives. What the fuck do you expect?
They offered a $35 a month subscription to view it and they think that is reasonable.
Is that $35 per month just to watch GoT?
They offered a $35 a month subscription to view it and they think that is reasonable.
Was that for the entire year or just the few months the show actually runs? In both cases it is ridiculous though.
Is that $35 per month just to watch GoT?
Their "showcase" channels which has the HBO shows. However their website says its $50 a month just for those channels. http://www.foxtel.com.au/foxtelplay/gameofthrones/default.htm So it might of been only the one with got on it. [editline]20th June 2014[/editline] Just looked further, it was $35 for first three months.
Foxtel Go is fucking shitehouse quality too. Runs at like a terrible bitrate at 480p.
Gee I wonder why considering we get things so late and in the age of the internet that shit is unacceptable.

You have to make paying for it more convenient than downloading it illegally. And no, trying to stop 100% piracy is not possible. The most you can do is reduce it.
Australia is the worst offender in the world when it comes to online piracy
maybe there's an endemic problem with the system instead, i mean when everybody is doing something illegal then maybe possibly there's a problem with your legal system or the way people obtain digital media there
Get rid of foxtels fucking monopoly Besides in Australia even police officers pirate so I doubt highly this shit will be enforced
Get rid of foxtels fucking monopoly Besides in Australia even police officers pirate so I doubt highly this shit will be enforced
It'll be enforced, anywhere, anytime there is a possibility of "making more money" real or misguided, they'll enforce it. The Police won't be the problem, it'll be the government and independent organisations fucking with ISPs who'll in turn fuck with the customers. You're all a bunch of criminals, how fucking dare you force hard working wealthy people use Goldstar 3 private jets instead of Goldstar 5 with the on board glassware cut from diamonds. I can't believe how inconsiderate you cunts are. I hope they sue you all for 10 million theoretical dollars, that way you'll have to work for the rest of your life, just to pay for their cushy life. In fact, you'll probably commit suicide just because of how miserable your life will become. That will make an example of you.
Meh. Your fault for releasing things months after everywhere else gets it.
Don't Aussies also have to pay higher prices for those things? I know they have to pay more for video games.
Australia has an issue with piracy because there's no way to fucking purchase this stuff without getting molested by fucking Foxtel. Once those cunts burn to the ground you'll see an immediate improvement.
And I'm pretty sure the ISPs, especially iiNet, will tell them to fuck off, again. Give it a year or so and we will be seeing another article esentially saying "No really we're serious, we are going to crack down on it for real this time guys!"
Maybe they should give up on trying to rehabilitate us. We are descended from the most horrible convicts to have ever lived. But seriously, tell Foxtel to fuck off and bring in other services to see a drop in piracy.
Although it sucks that Foxtel has a firm grasp on most newer movies and TV episodes, I don't think it's right to accuse Telstra of being rip-offs. I've been tempted to get it because it works out at $11/week for the cheapest package and like $20/week to get a significant amount of channels. But I do suppose it's bullshit in several ways as you have to pay extra for HD channels and if you want to watch the one motorsports channel on the sports package, you have to buy the entire sports package.
A spokesman for Foxtel, which is half-owned by news.com.au’s parent company News Corp Australia, said the piracy scourge was a “serious problem”. “It’s important to understand that it undermines the viability of all creative businesses,” he said. “It’s not just an issue for businesses, it affects the livelihoods of actors, writers, directors, set designers, and everyone else involved in the production of these programs.”
Baww nobodys going to pay $420 a year for Game of Thrones. I'd like to see newscorps profits from Foxtel.
Don't Aussies also have to pay higher prices for those things? I know they have to pay more for video games.
I haven't bought a movie or anything in years, DVD rentals are down because piracy is the cheapest option We have a service in Australia called Quikflix which is no where near Netflix's tier of quality, if Netflix came down to Australia and New Zealand I can assure you that piracy in the movie and tv show field would drop But Foxtel has its own service called Foxtel GO and Foxtel Play (One is for subscribers another one for people who aren't) which allows you to watch foxtel channels live online or replays Problem is that service is costly and you're only benefiting if you're on Telstra's network, I use GO all the time because I got a foxtel box but honestly I'd rather something else
