Defendor is a Canadian action/comedy/drama that came out late last year, directed by Peter Stebbings, starring Woody Harrelson, Kat Dennings, and Sandrah Oh.
Woody Harrelson plays Arthur Poppington, a man who isn't exactly all there, who proclaimed himself as a superhero: Defendor. He has no super powers, but he does have a wealth of unconventional gadgets such as marbles, jars of angry wasps, children's spy toys, and his grandfather's trench club. He teams up with a local crack smoking hooker named Kat, and the two of them set off to take down his arch enemy: "Captain Industry", a drug runner and crime boss in the city.
The commercials and general plot make it seem more like a comedy, the movie was astoundingly deep. Arthur is not comedically portrayed as a dumb retard, but is instead incredibly sympathetic in his mental deficiency. The presentation is great as well, the first half of the story is a retelling by Poppington to a government psychiatrist, and the story progression and development is masterfully done. Many moments of the movie are incredibly dramatic, and at times, truly moving.
But that's not to say there isn't any comedy. As soon as Harrelson dons his Defendor garb, the comedy becomes priceless. It can be incredibly dark comedy as well:[sp]one of my favorite scenes was when he started interrogating Dooley, a corrupt cop, with lemon juice to the eyes and nutcrackers to the fingers. Never before has a torture scene been so funny.[/sp]
Discuss, and if I'm late :suicide:
The first time I saw a trailer for it was after I saw a trailer for Kick-Ass so I thought that it was going to be a rip-off of it.
I guess not, I need to see it, it sounds good.
It was a great movie.
My parents were watching this a few nights ago. I watched the beginning but then I went downstairs to play ME2. The next day I read the synopsis and I regretted not watching it.
