After several months of rumours flying around, Nintendo has officially confirmed that the sequel to the Wii console will be out in 2012.
And according to a report on ABC News, as we’d already anticipated the new console will be shown off at E3 in June. Indeed, there will be a “playable” model present.
Although the company didn’t reveal anything else or any solid details about what we can expect from the machine.
Some sources have reported the Wii 2 will be much heavier on the hardware side, sporting a triple-core processor and the graphical grunt to bring HD visuals to the world of Nintendo. Although others argue the firm will stick to its gameplay-over-graphics guns.
There’s also been much speculation about the controller having a 6 inch touchscreen built-in. Nintendo clearly needs to pull something out of the bag in terms of innovation, as Wii sales have fallen considerably in recent times, with both Sony and Microsoft producing their own motion controllers for the PS3 and Xbox.
We’ll find out exactly what’s in store in just over six weeks time when E3 begins. New consoles aren’t expected from either MS or Sony for quite some time yet – indeed Microsoft saw Kinect as a refresh for the Xbox in itself.
So if Nintendo has designed something impressive, they could be in for a storming time with sales come next year.

Nintendo's next home console will be out in 2012, the videogames pioneer has revealed, though the 'Wii 2' - or whatever the machine will be called - is expected to be shown off at the E3 games industry show in June.
The Japanese company posted its latest financial data, for its 2011 fiscal year, which ended on 31 March, this morning - revenues and profit down 29 per cent and 66 per cent, respectively; 3.61m 3DS handhelds sold - and buried within was the oblique reference to the next Wii.
Well, with numbers like that, it has to give its investors some ray of hope.
Between the start of April 2010 and the end of March 2011, Nintendo sold 15.08m Wii machines - out of a grand total of 86m since Wii sales began in 2006 - and 17.52m DSes
I'm not very excited. You'd have thought they would have tried to make a bit more of a stir with this news.
another Nintendo product I wont be buying next year.
-snip-
boring name
i'm out
Wii 2 Fit 2 Plus 2.
Meh.
We'll see..
The name hasn't been confirmed has it. It's just the name the news article decided to use.

Yeah, it's current name is Project cafe. We really need bad reading back.
Wii was 1, this should just be called number 2 :v:
i hope they name it "revolution"
you know, what the Wii was called and THEN THEY RUINED IT ARGHRGRGHRGH
Now with even more gimmicks and even less games.
Wii 2? They're clearly running dry on ideas.
what the fuck? playstation 1, 2, and 3?
Triple Core, eh. Isn't that what the Xbox 360 currently has? Not trying to be a prick or anything, but this doesn't sound too much more powerful that what is already on the market. I mean it doesn't sound like it's going to be powerful, because if it was they would have said so to help build hype for it.
Edit: Obvious misunderstanding here. I know that the amount of cores in a processor isn't always how powerful it is. That's common knowledge. I was just trying to say that it doesn't SOUND much better than what is already out at the moment, and by them not giving more details (I remember them fully announcing the 3DS' specs long before it came out) it just makes me think that this console isn't going to be groundbreaking as far as power goes.
I personally hope they go back to the Gamecube's roots, and release a console with proper controllers and not fiddly motion sensors, although all of my younger relatives love their Wii, so maybe Nintendo are appealing to a different market once more.
if they fix alot of shit, and make the adult and family entertainment equal, and get rid of their boatloads of shovelware, ill think about it.
Yeah, whatever, not like im going to give up my pc for another gimmicky console.
Also, I am starting to not like Nintendo anymore. I always used to think they were a very good value company that appealed to everyone, but the new 3DS and the fact that they re-made the DS about 5 times anyway, aswell as the Wii being not much better than the gamecube (I even remember the official nintendo magazine having to make something up to explain why the screenshots looked so bad, when it was actually just the game looking bad). I can't see this Wii 2 selling, and in my opinion the original Wii has at least another year left in it before there is any need to make a new console.

This is one of the longest time gaps between consoles in Nintendo history. Usually it's 3-5 years per console.
what the fuck? playstation 1, 2, and 3?
When it comes to naming,
PlayStation > Wii
Wii 2? They're clearly running dry on ideas.
Wiiii
better?
Oh great, another 6 years of consoles halting the progression of everything.
I'd buy this. I have a feeling Nintendo is getting their act together after all these years and learned something from Sony and Microsoft.
When it comes to naming,

There's a particular reason they chose "Wii". Because everyone in the world can pronounce it, and some other reason I can't remember.
what the fuck? playstation 1, 2, and 3?
I feel like Playstation 1-3 flows better than Wii 1-3
So, even though it's the same concept, it just sounds silly

But it's not called Wii, it's called the "Cafe"(for now).
Can't fucking wait
Wii Two.
Wwo

Dammit I can't find a good one.
There's a particular reason they chose "Wii". Because everyone in the world can pronounce it, and some other reason I can't remember.
Because it sounds like weeeeeeeeee, which is not a sound you make when playing it.
what the fuck? playstation 1, 2, and 3?
Still, it doesn't seem like nintendo to just add a 2. Usually they come up with something different as opposed to just using the same name. Except for maybe the SNES.
