Our last task for the Musical Production class was to record and mix an entire song, with vocals. I'm not a singer, and I rushed through just to get the few lines done that I made up pretty much as I went. I hope you guys like it. I play guitar and bass, sing, and programmed the drums. (I was originally planning to record real drums, but time was scarce and it wasn't possible).

The intro sounds really sloppy and this isn't just because it's mathrock, it just is sloppy.
Once you start to play some chords it sounds good though, and after that it's all good again. One way to fix that initial problem is to play the whole thing twice, and cut it off after the first one, because by then you'll be in the groove and it'll sound clean and well-played.
Vocals aren't too shabby actually, you sing with confidence and it really shines through. The riffing after that is pretty cool. Something that bothers me a bit is the drums playing straight while your guitars (bass and electric) play these riffs that are a bit "off" (as in, mathrock riffing). I like how you double the vocals, it adds a lot.
At 1:15 and on when the bass does all of his things, I really like that.
The small break at 1:27 is really cool, I think you could give the drums some more space here and have it go wild.
Something that's really cool is the guitars playing two different things on left and right while drums and bass keep the middle safe, it works well and gives you plenty of options on what you want to focus on, which invites you to listen to the song more to figure out what happens.
Overall I think this is a really cool track, the bass could probably have some more low, the drums I think should have a touch of reverb though. Guitar tone is really sexy, what gear do you have?
Sounds exactly like Sky Eats Airplane. Were you inspired by them?

Thanks alot for the feedback. I know what you mean with the intro being sloppy, but still.. haha.
The deal with the drums was that I was supposed to record real drums, but instead I had to program them, and I have no patience whatsoever when it comes to programming "fun" drums. I pretty much play a beat on the synth and then quantize it accordingly. If I had just one more day of studio time I could have done real drums.
Again thanks alot! The guitar tone is actually done in Guitar Rig 4.. did my own thing pretty much. EQ'd alot but damn, Guitar Rig 4 is really versatile.

I haven't heard them before, haha. I'm really into The Fall of Troy and the british mathrock scene. Meet Me In St Louis and Colour for example.

Alright, yeah I figure it must be tough and time-consuming to work on drums that stray away from a regular 4/4 beat, the drums themselves sound good so it's not really that big of a problem. =) I'd love to hear what you could do with some drumming of yourself if you ever get the studio time, I bet it would make an already great track a lot better.
Guitar Rig 4 huh, looks like I have to spend some money to get that then!
I didn't like it, but it's just personal taste.
I found it far to messy.
The tone of the chords is quite nice, but the riffing at the start is just horrible.

Mathrock is messy.
Gotta love a bit of 5 beat patterns. I would have liked it longer.
Pretty awesome vocals actually.
I really dig the vocals. The guitar stuff is nice at times too (not into mathrock at all).
start a band
the singing was really nice, but as dick tracy said, some of it sounds sloppy
(you're putting me out of business with your critique dick)

i love it. "perfect" songs get boring sometimes.

Nah, you still provide much better critique than me so don't worry about me putting you out of business, I still have a really long way to go before that. =)

Awesome, I also enjoy The Fall of Troy. I liked this song quite a bit.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Thanks alot everyone, for both positive and negative response. It helps me evolve, and I thank you.
Whoever said "start a band", I do have a band, but it's not this kind of music. I used to have a band like this though we didn't play much, mostly jammed. http://www.myspace.com/herelionsaboundband
I'll have 5 months of studio time coming up soon, so I'll try to record more cool stuff. With real drums this time.

Haha, fuck man. That album was okay, but definitely not living up to their old stuff.
I listen to quite a bit of math rock mostly fall of troy and i can definately hear the influence here. Great job.
The main issues are with timing. This has been said. A lot of the double tracking is way to out of time. The mix also sounds a bit dull, I would have brightened it up a bit.
I really liked the tone of the guitar.
Mathrock is messy.
It doesn't have to be. It's only messy because it's difficult to perform.

Alot of the tracking? Alright man. And the problem was that I didn't really have much time AT ALL. As I said, I didn't even have enough time to record any real drums. I really wish I had more time.

I was just speaking in easy terms.
I fucking love the chord progressions. And the whole track kept me on my feet with listening anticipation.
Good job, you make good music. I would have a hard-on if I got to play with you for like a day and blend musical chemistry. I wish I had more creative musicians to play with where I live!

Hah thanks man, that actually means alot. Wish I had more creative musicians here too. Noone really plays like I do around here so it's hard to find anyone to jam with.
Shit happens. There's closet musicians throughout the world: I wish it were easier for them to interact!
What are some good math rock bands with a similar sound to this song? :v:
Also, where are you studying music production?
