• Why i dont like America (as an american)

Imma make this short, an put things in bullet points -The media There is definitely some connection between the companies/government and the media, as they actively mold things in ways that are damaging to the average person's mind, and seem to have the interests of certain people in mind more than anything else. For instance, the media censoring of Ron Paul has been really bad, and i believe its because they know ron doesnt like the media and is planning on downsizing the government a lot, which the companies/government dont like, and also his stance on drugs (companies HATE illegal drugs because they will interfere with the medicine and tobacco industries). Then theres the whole thing with the media basically turning us into zombies, filling our minds with stupid phenomena like jersey shore and making us followers of the norm. Ok im gonna stop there to not write too much right now. -The hypocrisy of the government The Constitution that people seem to love so much is explicitly against religion's involvement in government, yet the republicans who are so for sticking to the constitution are ALWAYS mixing government and religion. Hell, santorum said he wants to incorporate religion more into government, and thats considered commentable? Also, moral issues like drugs, abortion, and the death penalty are often decided with religion being a major decider in the discussions. I know the government should represent the peoples interests, which usually include religion, but the constitution should be at least in line with this. And dont get me started with the politicians buying hookers, cheating, doing drugs, bribery, all these things that are illegal that they do all the time. -Corperations stranglehold on our lives This is my biggest point, as its getting to the point where its ridiculous. The corperations and their lobbyists influence most of the actions of politicians and elections, they basically control the media, they practically run the country (as the SOPA bill has shown). And their only interests are those of the companies, not in helping the people. Thats why we were forced to bail out all those stupid companies, because they are the foundation of America. When they fail, the world fails, not just America, because America is crucial to the world economy. Why is marijuana illegal, even though it would help the economy so much? Because the drug companies cant give up any room for them. I know this isnt just an American issue, but it started here and has now harmed the world greatly. Were losing rights as time goes on, the government isnt here to help us any more, its here to keep us from hurting the companies. 3rd world countries have dictators taking their rights, and we have companies screwing us over. -The people This one hurts me to say, because I am one of the people. But theres no excuse anymore for not knowing whats going on in the world anymore. Theres no excuse for not being able to do something about your problems anymore, because in the age of the internet we have access to ridiculous amounts of information. But people still watch fox news, having their minds polluted by sensationalists, people still think marijuana will make you go insane and commit crimes, people still dont know that America stole hawaii from its people, planted dictators through out South America and caused much of the unrest there, and that we easily have the resources to help the starving around the world. Its not just america that has done things like this, but many of the european powers have begun to modernize much faster than America. But the people have become complacent, they have begun to shut out the immediate issues we face, and instead sit around criticizing obama. Also, lots of people here are just ignorant, theres people who think the poor people in the ghetto are just lazy and can get up an apply for a job, or that they waste all their money on drugs. Theres also people who forget that blacks are still disadvantaged today, as most blacks have very little money from their earlier generations, and even us with good jobs still are relatively unstable economically. I have friends who have grandparents who buy them tv's an shit, my grandparents an those before could barely afford their own tv's. The effects of racism still impact us daily. Ok, so if you read all that, i know it sounds like im venting but im just mad overall at not just America, but lots of the powerful countries, we arent doing shit about anything man, its like we forgot whats really important, the world is getting chopped down (the Amazon Jungle), the water polluted, and species killed off, because companies need their money. There are alternatives available if we make a concertied effort, but congress cant do shit and every country is on different pages, so the world isnt workin together. Ok, thats all for now, so the debate is whether you agree or not.
Not really a very impressive debate. I personally don't like america very much but i still would never want to live anywhere else.
A lot of this information is biased/untrue, especially the part about marijuana bailing out the economy. As for the corporate greed bullshit, it's just the baggage that comes with capitalism and commercial freedom. We do as much as we can to keep it under our thumb, but it's better than living in communism. And a lot of this shit applies to a lot of other countries other than America, too. Stop generalizing, it'll help your arguments out.

There are a lot of safeguards that could be put in place, but they are branded as socialist and instantly dismissed. It's funny, because you told him to stop generalizing and you're doing the same thing.

Structure your arguments so you don't look like a tool next time, thank you.

Congress is undoubtedly highly influenced by corporations, and the antitrust laws havent been enforced much recently. You can only get one type of cable in many areas and the media is basically controlled entirely by 4 companies, nowadays theres like 3-4 companies controlling industries in the same ways monopolies used to do it, their ducking the rules. Time warner cable doesnt do shit when you complain to them because they know that their the only company thats gonna give us the stuff we need at a reasonable price, fuck our area's internet has been shit for years and years. Oh, an i visited toronto, Canada is pretty chill, wouldnt mind living there as opposed to america, im tellin you guys theres places outside of here that are great. Only thing that keeps me here is family.

As a Scottish guy, and following American politics (since I know that your bullshit like SOPA/PIPA will somehow affect me), it seems that there's this strange mentality with every single Amercican that everything is a reality show. It's really hard to describe, and I don't know if I'm the only person who notices it or not. But American politics are a disgrace. Been watching the Republican debates, and I seriously can't believe that any of these guys are trying to run a country.
I'm from Scotland and live in America. I've also lived in countless other-places and experienced different cultures and ways of life. America isn't that terrible, everyplace has corruption and greed.
America is the greatest nation on the Earth. I would trade your citizenship for my Swedish one any day.
that's more of an infrastructure problem not corporate greed
true true
America is the greatest nation on the Earth. I would trade your citizenship for my Swedish one any day.
I hope this is satire.
America is the greatest nation on the Earth. I would trade your citizenship for my Swedish one any day.
Rly? whats goin on over there? [editline]22nd January 2012[/editline] hey all my posts arent workin right, they're linking together for some reason
America is the greatest nation on the Earth.
Not even the best New world nation. Both Aussie land & Canada would take that title before the states. If you're gonna live anywhere in the states i recommend states close to the Canadian border.
Ok sure, but to me, a country is more about the culture and environment. As long as I have my basic freedoms, I don't really care too much about politics. Sweden has shit politics anyway. When I hear the Star Spangled Banner and I see pictures of the cities and landscapes of that country, I just feel "yes, this is for me, this is home". How clicheé that might sound. :P
Da Shaman, I'm curious to know if you've ever lived in another nation for an extended period of time, say 2-3 years? While the United States certainly has it's problems, I've enjoyed it immensely compared to the other places I've lived over my years (Malaysia, Australia and Ireland being some of them.)

I value three things when moving to a country-freedom of how i want to live my life (something america makes a bit hard), the enviornment, which is really nice in both america and argentina, and the people, which is ok i guess in both places. But i dont want to live in america my whole life, i want to help see it change for the better though.

Ideally, politicians couldn't be lobbied/bribed.

[editline]22nd January 2012[/editline]
9/11 WAS A INSIDE JOB
Your avatar is quite fitting.
But they can. Because they're humans and greed is human nature. The only way to eliminate corruption would be to have the government be an AI.
We could probably start by making it illegal :v:
We could probably start by making it illegal :v:
So? Then they just bribe the people who enforce those laws.
Because they're humans and greed is human nature.
Sex is human nature right? To fulfill sexual desire? So by your logic, it is perfectly fine for people to rape anyone that we desire sexually. Just because the dark parts of the human mind exist doesnt mean we should act on their impulses. Greed is also inexcusable and should be restrained.
I'm not saying anyone should act on these "dark" impulses, but that it's impossible for everyone not to.
Not necessarily impossible but yes highly unlikely, but for like most of the companies to do this is kinda outrageous, then again it might just be a trait of people who are able to get this much money/power. If they dont adopt that mentality they will be swallowed by another company.
But they can. Because they're humans and greed is human nature. The only way to eliminate corruption would be to have the government be an AI.
What if someone loads malware onto the government? then what?
But they can. Because they're humans and greed is human nature. The only way to eliminate corruption would be to have the government be an AI.
Or even better: Remove the government.

Should I generalize all the people over in the UK to be total assholes and disregard everybody who is British? No, because I know that assholes exist in every nationality and colour, and that I wouldn't want people to generalize me ether. On Racism and politics in the UK, you could say the same thing about the BNP, being a bunch of racist nationalist like how a lot of Conservatives in America are against illegal immigrants in the US.
Or even better: Remove the government.
Why? That would only make the problem worse. I have yet to hear a single person give a decent argument for anarchy so please try.
Theres no excuse for not being able to do something about your problems anymore, because in the age of the internet we have access to ridiculous amounts of information.
That's not very fair, all we have out here is a public library and the overpriced comcast lords of the universe. Half the people can't even afford their water bills, I doubt they're able to sit in at a computer with the internet just trying to learn about the outside world. I'm not saying the ignorance out here is okay or anything, by no means should we live in a society where someone isn't welcome because of their skin color in this day and age but there's not a lot anyone can do about it in such an underdeveloped place.
