Community creators earn big (think $40k+) with TF2 items
As of the Mann-Conomy update to Team Fortress 2, which hit in late September, Valve has emphasized putting community made content up for purchase. The response so far as been, well, it's been phenomenal.
The first five creators -- Rob Laro, Shawn Spetch, Steven Skidmore, Spencer Kern, and Shaylyn Hamm -- have earned royalties between $39,000 to $47,000 per person, and that's only for the first two weeks of sales (!!!). My word.
What does this mean for the rest of us? Hopefully, other developers will follow Valve's example by expanding the peer-to-peer marketplace far beyond its current state. Crowdsourcing can, and frequently does, lead to incredible things.
Mann-conomy: an experiment in capitalism
Sorry, don't have a more substantial source yet
I'm sorry to say, but i think you were beaten to the chase.
Christ, you can buy a car by selling hats on a game?
brb making a TF2 model pack for mega capitalism
Wait wait wait
So you're telling me that 5 people have put up their own custom content, and managed to make $39,000 to $47,000 per person, in the first two weeks?

Each pixel costs over four hundred dollars to display for 12 seconds.

Yeah. They're getting a really good cut.
Polycount members should be proud as hell
While I say Bravo to them, I can't help but to think this might hurt the Modding community a bit... Won't this give some sort of incentive to not release decent modded content (Custom weapon models and the like) but instead try and get them to be sold in a Man-Co store?
whoah
fucking dicks
This is cool, now if only my computer wouldn't have a hissy fit when I play Team Fortress 2....I swear, this thing can run DX10 fine but once TF2 comes into play, I have to put everything on the lowest setting and I still get studdered to hell!
Lucky bitches.

Luck had nothing to do with it.
oh cool. a hat.
brb learning how to model.
Am I the ONLY one who doesn't GIVE A FUCK ABOUT STUPID POINTLESS HATS AND SHITTY UNLOCKABLE CONTENT?

you probably don't have any hats HAH what a faggot
Holy shit
I need to make some fucking hats NOW!
Guys remember when TF2 wasn't a hat based simulator game?
It's funny how the most useless feature of TF2 earn people the most money. Or hell, any money.
Haven't played TF2 for ages, seems like all focus has shifted towards unsubstantial shit. If I were to play again with vanilla player setup I assume I'd get laughed at by hat-wielding elite players

Ah I remember the good times... Then hats came, brought idling and people smugging over having #number of hats and then it was no more the TF2 I once knew...

.
Played it some time ago. EVERYONE now has at least 1 or 2 hats.
I still remember the day I played a game of Badwater, and someone said "Hey, what's this hat slot in the character loadout?"
"Apparently you can find a camera beard for the spy."
"Oh cool, they must be super rare"
I used to think TF2 content updates were a good thing.
TF2 has really gone to shit. It's just become a big conglomerate mess of random useless shit which WAY too many people care about more than the actual game.
brb learning to model in Source
I don't like their new direction, you shouldn't give the rich set bonus hats that cost around £4-6 just so they can kick my ass with their headshot immunity, sentry damage reduction etc.
Holy shit, I knew they would get money but damn that is ALOT.
Gotta learn to model.

The set hats can be crafted...
My point is the hats were for decoration not for protection.
