A police force has begun recording attacks on members of subcultures, such as goths and emos, as hate crimes. Previously hate crimes were only registered for offences against race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or transgender identity. It's still not the same thing as beating someone up because of their race.
So all I have to do is dress in dark clothing and act depressed all the time and anyone who tries to beat me up is committing a hate crime? Being emo/goth/punk/etc however is indeed a choice, and if you cant take people giving you shit for it you can always stop looking like a tosser.
It's common for chavs to attack someone purely based on what they're wearing with no words being said at all, close enough to be honest.
That's just them being dicks. I don't think getting into a fight with someone because of their choices or personality should be a hate crime. I think beating them up because of what born like, is.

oho I remember my punk days in London, didn't get bothered much but we did run into chavs and gangs now and then.
guys this ain't true emo this is straight edge stay true x
Being emo/goth/punk/etc however is indeed a choice, and if you cant take people giving you shit for it you can always stop looking like a tosser.
That's exactly why it should be recorded: It is a choice. One of the controverises when they introduced the new rules for registering hate crimes was the exclusion of certain life choices - marriage status, for one. Sure, you can't help being black, but you can choose to go to church and practice worship, or wear shirts about your political beliefs - crimes against certain groups that have a democratic right to express their beliefs are exempt even though crimes against them are motivated by similar hated and bias as people of religious or ethnic cultures do. It's the same reason we can't hunt down John Smith for being John Smith, or because he's a catholic and is gay. Why should he be targetted for being a conservative, or a wican? Crime is crime, sure, but if we can get statistics on breakdown of what motivates crimes we can do something about it.
The story in the source is horrendous
Ms Lancaster was attacked in a park in Bacup, Lancashire, on 24 August 2007, along with her boyfriend Robert Maltby, because of the way they were dressed. She was kicked and stamped on as she cradled her badly beaten boyfriend. While Mr Maltby made a partial recovery from his injuries, Ms Lancaster slipped into a coma after the attack and died later in hospital
I've heard of the charity they set up after this, at concerts and shit you can pay extra to stay in a comfy tent and the money goes towards said charity
Being emo/goth/punk/etc however is indeed a choice, and if you cant take people giving you shit for it you can always stop looking like a tosser.
Verbally sure but people should be able to dress and act how they want without being beaten up.
Being emo/goth/punk/etc however is indeed a choice, and if you cant take people giving you shit for it you can always stop looking like a tosser.
So it's okay to socially bully people into conformity and remove free will to choose your own culture, style, and identity? It would be acceptable, then, for me to beat the shit out of someone who caters to the metal, country, or indie subcultures because they like that subculture and make themselves identifiable with it? How many steps away is this argument from the argument "You may not have chosen to be gay, but you can choose not to act/dress/look like you are." I don't know about you, but I don't choose what I do and don't like. Honestly, the social situation has forced me to not be open about some things and cultures that I like because of fear of public backlash. And what's that teaching kids? "Don't be different" "Submit to majority rule" "Suppress your personality"? Great lessons for young people.
Being emo/goth/punk/etc however is indeed a choice, and if you cant take people giving you shit for it you can always stop looking like a tosser.
Last time I checked religion is also a choice
I really don't think chavs/normal people would attack goths or emos because they hate them, I'd say it's because chavs are idiots and emos/goths look like easy-to-bully idiots
Verbally sure but people should be able to dress and act how they want without being beaten up.
They get charged with assault anyway.
That's just them being dicks. I don't think getting into a fight with someone because of their choices or personality should be a hate crime. Discrimination.
These types of people exist in the UK still...?
Attacking someone because of their choice of clothing and lifestyle, without provocation, is still discriminatory, which is what the hate crime laws in the UK have a focus on. If attacking someone because of their choices is a hate crime then that would be a very slippery slope to classifying almost all assault cases as a ''hate'' crime.
So should it be a hate crime to attack anyone based on their clothes?
Not in my books. If attacking someone because of their choices is a hate crime then that would be a very slippery slope to classifying almost all assault cases as a ''hate'' crime.
It's discrimination of a class. Assault cases are assault cases because it's against an individual or group, separate from a class distinction. Hate crimes are hate crimes because the motivation is not the individual or the situation, but the class.

Or maybe they all are in the same school or hang out together. I mean there are a million ways you can group any individual that's a victim of an assault. It's a lot harder to prove you beat someone up because of they way they dress if you actually beat them up because of their personality. I mean the UK has some really weird laws from all the ones I've heard so far. I don't think it should be a hate crime if you beat someone up because of the choices they make. That's just a crime all the same.
These types of people exist in the UK still...?
Hello
Being emo/goth/punk/etc however is indeed a choice, and if you cant take people giving you shit for it you can always stop looking like a tosser.
See you pal. Aye, you. Massive cripple, well done.
These types of people exist in the UK still...?
I don't really see emos or goths but I see punks all the time.
Why can't chav culture just end, can we just put them all in a giant off shore bin. Never really seen the point in specially defining something as a hate crime. How is beating someone up over something like race any worse than beating someone up over something like religion or culture (assuming the people of these aren't attacking or being aggressive towards others)
Emo is actually a genre of rock music...never knew that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo
attacking anyone is a hate crime.
Every crime that's commited because of a characteristic of the victim should logically be classed as hate crime if this goes ahead... Even then I still don't understand the point of hate crimes in the first place
Even then I still don't understand the point of hate crimes in the first place
STOP BEING DIFFERENT UGH
