As Ramadan begins, more than 100 hunger-strikers in Guantánamo Bay continue their protest. More than 40 of them are being force-fed. A leaked document sets out the military instructions, or standard operating procedure, for force-feeding detainees. In this four-minute film made by Human Rights organisation Reprieve and Bafta award-winning director Asif Kapadia, US actor and rapper Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def), experiences the procedure
[sp]oh god i can't watch[/sp]
That was horrible to watch.
Fuck, what makes that even more terrifying is that for the people who are having this done for real there is no stopping it half way.
jesus fucking christ i would have never imagined the day i would see mos def just break down like that this is just fucked up
Sick... serious props to Mos Def. This is the kind of stuff that's needed. The only real reason this shit keeps happening is because it all happens in a tiny island away from everything and the facts aren't brought up to the masses in a clear enough manner. He did this for a great cause. Let's see if it helps.
mos def is the fucking man
oh god I can't watch this I can't even stand it when a little water goes up my nose while swimming, let alone a fucking tube being shoved through there
The real question is, is that real emotion or acting? Not that it makes a difference. Horrible procedure anyways.
The real question is, is that real emotion or acting? Not that it makes a difference. Horrible procedure anyways.
Well, they stopped after a few minutes when he said "this is me", so I'm assuming that if he was in character, he broke it because it was too unbearable for him.
I just watched it a few minutes ago, and when I went to show it to a friend, apparently it got taken down..? What the hell. [editline]8th July 2013[/editline] Oh, the video was stolen from the Guardian. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/video/2013/jul/08/mos-def-force-fed-guantanamo-bay-video
Holy shit I almost threw up, and people gotta go through that for 2 hours twice a day, fucked up completely.
The real question is, is that real emotion or acting? Not that it makes a difference. Horrible procedure anyways.
seems like he broke character at some point, or used a safeword or similar. They were all very realistically rough on him up to a point where a dude starts waving his arms and they all stop at once.
Eugh, that was too hard to watch, that's fucked up.
Friggin hero.
working mirror [editline]8th July 2013[/editline] Holy shit this is devastating
Holy shit this is just really fucking awful
Good jesus. Just eat you fuckers.
When he starts crying it really shows how distressing the whole experience was
Aww I actually kinda felt sorry for him, pretty awesome on his part to do something like this
This technique of force-feeding is called nasogastric intubation, and it's as scary as it sounds. A thread about the pain it can incur. This guy got internal bleeding in his throat. Can you imagine how painful that must have been? The best image I could find was a pediatric procedure, but it highlights the more gruesome aspect of it. This is what's happening in the video, and the thing is, they do it without sedation. It's like getting a root canal without sedation, it's just insanely fucked up how they would force people to do this without offering a more humane procedure. Chained up, conscious, while a tube is forced down your throat. Convulsing and fighting against it will only make the procedure more difficult and painful for yourself. Lastly, A Dep. of Defense article from 2005 where the staff promote the use of the feeding tube. "For the most part, the feedings are not involuntary. Both men said the vast majority of detainees voluntarily participate in the feedings. In fact, Edmonson noted, some even insert their own feeding tubes. "They are generally cooperative with the medical staff in that effort..." (Edmonson)
-snip- didn't see the mirror.
Here's another mirror just in case
jesus, force feeding is fucked up
no words.
What is their reasoning behind not sedating them?
What is their reasoning behind not sedating them?
money
What is their reasoning behind not sedating them?
Why spend money on making these prisoners not feel the pain? It's almost like a punishment for self-starvation.
It seems like Mos Def can be now called called Fos Fed! I am terrible.

You know, this is terrible and all, but you guys realize that it all could be avoided if they just, you know, ATE?
