Facebook Messenger, available immediately for Android and iPhone, is a standalone app that can send messages to your Facebook friends or any contacts in your phonebook via mobile. All of your messages, whether to FB friends or phonebook contacts, are stored in the Facebook interface and are accessible from both the web and the Messenger app. The new service can handle both one-on-one messages and group chats for all of your multi-person coordination needs. Now you don't have to choose between texting and sending a Facebook message or chat. This app will do the choosing for you with a single message.
What a load of shit.
they fucking charge me 20 cents a text both in and out so it better replace texting!
Impossible to take over, no Wi-Fi for it to work, there are hundreds of these apps already...

sexting over facebook messages not so private
If you have a decent data plan on your phone contract then this could easily be used instead of texting. But it won't.

With the shitty 3g coverage with rogers in canada it would be near impossible.
meh, WP7 has native facebook chat integrated in the messaging hub...
I have unlimited texting, this is pointless and silly.
If you don't use Facebook, I don't see what the issue is with complaining about this.
I'll stick to texting.
Wow, thanks Zuckerberg! Now I can message people offline while I look for people who are actually online! Cheers!

Why would you use that over Google Voice? I can send SMS messages to real phones for free with it.
If you don't use Facebook, I don't see what the issue is with complaining about this.
What are you talking about, if you don't use facebook you're obviously a nobody.
I have unlimited texting, this is pointless and silly.
Amen brother! :D Though I do see some uses in this. The only thing it really does is allows me to contact my pals without asking for their cell number first.
Texting and Skype works fine enough already.
Texting sucks dick, I hope this takes off. A lot of people already use proprietary system-locked bullshit like BBM and now iMessage so I hope this can be the cross-platform replacement
I do all my sexting by postal mail, cheapest way
Texting sucks dick, I hope this takes off. A lot of people already use proprietary system-locked bullshit like BBM and now iMessage so I hope this can be the cross-platform replacement
No, texting does not suck anything. It's very efficient actually.
Have you tried the fucking facebook app in itself? It's an absolute joke, and I don't expect this to be any better.
The title makes the app seem more ambitious than it really is. It's an app, and that's basically what the developers wanted it to be. I don't see what's so dumb about it. You have the option to send SMS messages for free and you get to chat with people who are on Facebook.
No, texting does not suck anything. It's very efficient actually.
Can't send over wifi 160 character limit Phone-to-phone only No file transfers (MMS can do it but again, no sending over wifi and it usually costs money) No contact info, just a number I am biased against it though because my network's signal ranges from shit to non-existent in my house and I get pissed knowing that I could send this fucking message in a millisecond over wifi
It's adding multiple extra steps to perform something as simple as "hey dude meet me at the strip club."
Those "extra steps" are for the better. In the screenshots you'll notice that you can attach images and send map directions. Plus there's group chat.
