Gif: Hard or soft G?: The pronunciation is serious business edition
9 replies, posted
On suggestion from a Sensationalist Headlines thread, since the creator of the GIF says that it's pronounced 'jiff' and fuck him.
Personally I pronounce it as gee-aye-eff/g-i-f, but that's not the point, now is it?
This is serious business guys.

It's always gif with a hard G, As in Graphics interchange format.
The reason why he wants it to be J I cannot understand, it is shorthand for graphics interchange format, why would the hard G in graphics become soft?
I pronounce it "Jiff". Sue me. Also I just realized we can't insult each other here :c
"Fuck the creator of the word 'Giraffe', I'll pronounce it with a hard g all I want they can't stop me!"
This is what you guys sound like. Go on a protest for every word that doesn't use a hard G or something.
If the creator says it's one way, there's no legitimate debate to be had, just right and wrong ways to pronounce it. You can't apply conventional rules of English to try and argue it must be a hard G, it opens up a huge can of worms regarding how to say other formats like .jpg(where does the 'e' in j-peg come from?). Wilhite really says it best himself.
They are wrong. It is a soft ‘G,’ pronounced ‘jif.’ End of story.
It relates to the peanut butter brand. When the guy behind .GIF was working at CompuServe the employees would say "Choosy developers choose GIF" in reference to the slogan for the commercials.

Except considering that it's an acronym for Graphics Interchange Format, and Graphics is pronounced with a hard G.
I used to say jiff because of my french accent but now I'm using a hard G because everybody use it.
It just doesn't make sense to pronounce it Jiff. I get the reference (Skippy is better anyway), but it's like pronouncing GUI with a soft G. It just doesn't roll off the tongue.
