Some form of dark sorcery presumed as honour system appears to be improving League of Legends
It’s been over one week since we launched the Honor Initiative, one of the largest experiments ever conducted at Riot. Today, I’d like to take some time to share a few results we’ve seen, and talk a little more about how we’re preventing Honor spamming.
Honor So Far
As I mentioned before, we’ve historically reacted only to toxic behavior through systems like the Tribunal, and the Honor Initiative was our first attempt at positive reinforcement in League of Legends.
The Honor Initiative is a multi-phase experiment, and in the first phase, our goal is to see if we’re able to accurately identify the positive pillars of our community. Secondly, we hope to see if it’s possible to positively nudge “neutral” players by making it easier to be good instead of toxic. Already, we’ve seen some dramatic, global results in normal and ranked solo queue reports the past week:
Negative Attitude reports: -29% in normals and -11% in ranked
Offensive Language reports: -35% in normals and -20% in ranked
Verbal Abuse reports: -41% in normals -17% in ranked
Preventing Honor Abuse
One of the major concerns we took into account when designing Honor was abuse – it’s obvious this was a concern some of you shared: “Dr. Lyte, people are going to trade Honor! This is going to be meaningless!” Rest assured, Riot has spent a lot of extra time implementing anti-abuse features into the Honor Initiative. We tasked nearly half a dozen PhDs and statisticians to this problem and let them tinker with models for weeks. What did they come up with, and what’s going on in the background?
Pattern recognition: Honor was designed to recognize patterns. For example, Honorable players who are true positive should not be reported very often.
As an example, the system caught a player who was reported in 100% of his games after Honor launched, but he also got Honor in nearly every game. This obvious trader was caught.
Social interactions: Honor was designed to analyze interactions between players. For example, the system analyzes the players who are Honoring you and the players you give Honor to in an effort to determine the quality of these exchanges.
In another example, the system caught a player who received 100% of his Honor from a premade friend. Both the giver and the recipient were also toxic players and both were punished for this behavior.
Honor values: As mentioned above, Honor assesses the value of your exchanges. Receiving Honor from a stranger you’ve never played with before is valued more than Honor from a player who has played with you 100 times and Honored you multiple times. Design decisions like this were made to encourage players to be positive across a large number of games with a large variety of people—in fact, for the min-maxers, this is the optimal way to earn Honor.
So far, these abuse-prevention measures we built in have been highly effective:
Only 0.21% of players reported for consistent trading
0.63% of players actively trying to trade Honor
0.01% spamming Honor for dishonorable reasons
These players have all had their Honor reset to zero.
What’s next for Honor?
We’re deep into our planning for the next phase of Honor and we feel that this is just the beginning of the Honor Initiative. Even now, there’s more content to discover for the truly Honorable player! I hope players have been enjoying Honor so far, and together, let’s inspire others to be more Honorable. Let’s not only make a difference in League of Legends, let’s make a difference in online gaming.
As a player of League of Legends, I've definitely noticed that the general attitude in games has been a lot friendlier. I mean it's not like all of a sudden people have stopped throwing games but it's a damn good start for something I assumed would not have any effect. The funniest thing about this is they haven't even announced what the bonuses are for having honour, so at the moment it's technically a meaningless number.
It would also be nice if nobody turned this into a childish argument over whether LoL or Dota 2 is better, both games are good.
I forget the name of the principle offhand, but there's something in basic psychology that shows how human behavior is only temporarily altered through systems like this. People shape up initially, and then get lazy and fall back to previous levels.
Only time will tell here.
LoL woul be a ton better if all the characters were free completely. The whole reason why its like that in dota is for counter picking. But both communities are full of idiots and ~2pro4u~ assholes.
It's nice to know a feature that Riot copied 100% from DOTA2 works

Yeah, first game of Dota 2 I played 2 people left and one came back and fed all game and then spammed "fk die bitch" in chat. Both games have their share of assholes

^ see what I mean?

This is why I don't play MOBAs. As soon as you screw up once it's to the dogs for you.
makes me wonder how positive reinforcement changes up a game on a scale like LoL, like what if we had this system in something smaller and more instanced like left 4 dead

That's why I like playing with friends. We may get wrecked sometimes, but we're having fun doing so.
I haven't played in a long time, but from what I've heard the honor system works pretty decently. It doesn't seem like it would work to me.
Also for the people who hate the AoS community, basically you can escape the idiots by getting good at the game. The worst part of the community is at the lower rankings.

People like you are the reason why we can't just get along.
Everytime I attempt to play a MoBA, since I dont know how to play, they don't have the patience to just tell me what to do, but just spend the whole game telling me to leave.

LoL has a tutorial, I'm sure Dota 2 will get one eventually. (if it doesn't have one)

Technically xbox had it with the rep system. Players with low rep often get matched with other low rep characters. So i guess valve stole from microsoft?

If you want someone to play the game with who won't be a dick to you, you can add me on LoL (same as my FP username). I'd offer help on Dota 2 but I'm honestly so rusty that we'd probably be on the same page. Haven't played much Dota since the original on warcraft 3.

There is a selection that is greyed out atm for the tutorial in the game select mode.

in my case we just yell at eachother and call eachother names and then play another game as soon as our first one ends

Both of them are available to me, not sure why you can't access them.

Might want to find different people to play it with, we usually have good fun playing together. Alternatively, you could play custom XvX games on proving grounds because those are usually way more laid back

I played HoN first, cause it's mac compatible, and that didn't really help. Tells you the rules, but not how to be valuable.
[editline]9th October 2012[/editline]
speaking of which, any estimate which year Dota 2 will be available for mac?
I've generally seen people acting nicer. I mean you can tell some of it is straight up ass kissing but who cares? Long as I don't have to deal with people being dicks they can wear that fake smile for all I care.
I've also shifted my attitude a little bit in game with the addition of the honor system.

Exactly, fun.

I managed to be told I was playing wrong in a game with only bots... Someone from my friends list joined as a spectator and spent the whole time saying that everything I was doing was wrong.
