Russia will offer cheaper natural gas to Ukraine if the government in Kiev opts to join a Moscow-led economic bloc after halting free-trade talks with the European Union, according to First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov.
Ukraine’s economic difficulties will be best resolved if it chooses integration with Russia, Shuvalov said in an interview last month in Bloomberg News’s Moscow office.
“No one other than Russia can provide Ukraine with the necessary funds so quickly and in such a quantity,” Shuvalov said. “A gas agreement could help relieve Ukraine of a huge problem. We can also give them a loan, but we will not help them without commitments on their part.”
Ukraine failed to sign an EU free-trade accord last week, after suspending talks to repair its economic ties with Russia. The country is a key route for Russian natural gas shipments to the EU, while both Russia and the EU buy about 25 percent of Ukraine’s exports. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions for an economic bloc of former Soviet nations to rival the EU have put him in conflict with European leaders including German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
While Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych reiterated that the country’s goal is European integration, his about-face on the EU agreement has sparked the biggest street protests since the 2004 Orange Revolution that helped overturn an initial election victory won then by Yanukovych. Thousands of Ukrainians demonstrated in Kiev yesterday, calling on Yanukovych and his government to step down.
Sounds like it's time for another round of Germany vs Russia!
Gas is the only thing that keeps Russia relevant
Gas is the only thing that makes Russia relevant
What makes Ukraine relevant? Absolutely nothing. Ukraine is as a whole, uncompetitive.

Farmland, farming in general, metallurgy, coal mining (which is will become obsolete quite soon but still), salt mining, good locations for wind and water turbines. We have a lot of potential
Russia needs somewhere it can build all its dodgy nuclear reactors.

I thought some country (China I believe?) bought some of Ukraine to grow it's farm there to fight famine?
I thought some country bought some of Ukraine to grow it's farm there to support their own famine?
I haven't heard anything about that ever since I read about it on the news a few months ago for the first time
I thought some country (China I believe?) bought some of Ukraine to grow it's farm there to fight famine?
China, yeah.
Farmland, farming in general, metallurgy, coal mining (which is will become obsolete quite soon but still), salt mining, good locations for wind and water turbines. We have a lot of potential
And you're saying Russia doesn't dominate Ukraine in all of those sectors? You said all that made Russia relevant was gas.
And you're saying Russia doesn't dominate Ukraine in all of those sectors? You said all that made Russia relevant was gas.
No, it really doesn't
No, it really doesn't
Prove it?
And from another persons prospective. Ukraine has no reason to invest into it. If I wanted to invest in eastern Europe, I'd go Baltic states or Poland.
What makes Ukraine relevant? Absolutely nothing. Ukraine is as a whole, uncompetitive.
Nah, It's got 4A Games.

Too bad they can't even get computers and chairs imported into the country without it being stolen in delivery. GSC was nice too, until apparently the mafia had their way.
Sounds like it's time for another round of Germany vs Russia!
Not quite, they have to partition Poland first.
There's a procedure to this, get with the traditions :v:
And isn't Ukraines economy just two cities with a major amount of space inbetween them?
Kiev and Odessa.
Farmland, farming in general, metallurgy, coal mining (which is will become obsolete quite soon but still), salt mining, good locations for wind and water turbines. We have a lot of potential
Potential, yeah. But in it's current state it's industry is too old and stagnated to be competitive.

To further this point, a lot of the newer industrial equipment from Ukraine is outdated Czeck shit.

so you have farms and mining, amazing
russia has (and these are dominant, global sectors):
aircraft industry
space industry
railroad industry
significant IT market
newly initiated plan regarding nanotechnology
an agricultural sector that dwarfs ukraine by a long shot
absolutely massive weapon exportation rate that several dozen countries literally depend on
huge international trade system with the entire world, and much more.
not to mention the metric fuckton of natural resources russia has always been famed for. (i.e; oil, nickel, natural gas, diamonds (largest diamond-producing nation in the world), gold, etc)
who is ukraine
Ukraine's potential has always been leeched away by Russia.

Why are you even comparing Ukraine with Russia, ain't worth that. Even Serbia or Belarus is doing better than them.

Dont do it Ukraine.
Why are you even comparing Ukraine with Russia, ain't worth that. Even Serbia or Belarus is doing better than them.
dunno, lasterbeams seems to be one of those buttfrustrated ukranians that have a burning hatred/prejudice for all things russian.
they may have been utter dicks in soviet times and all but comparing ukraine to russia in anyway is really not a smart thing to do, russia is a global player and ukraine is almost like the complete opposite.
Farmland, farming in general, metallurgy, coal mining (which is will become obsolete quite soon but still), salt mining, good locations for wind and water turbines. We have a lot of potential
don't forget old soviet era rocket hardware, china is buying anything space related right now for their program and ukraine had a lot of the manufacturing base for the space industry as well as stockpiles of old experimental soviet hardware
what do you mean Ukraine is worth shit? They are good in Red Alert
What makes Ukraine relevant? Absolutely nothing. Ukraine is as a whole, uncompetitive.
