Wedged between Tim Burton’s unrealized vision for Superman Lives and Bryan Singer’s much-criticized Superman Returns in the storied on-screen history of the Man of Steel is Superman: Flyby, a planned origin story that turned out to be another false start for the superhero franchise. With a script by J.J. Abrams in hand, director McG eyed Scarlett Johansson as Lois Lane and Shia LaBeouf as Jimmy Olsen. For the lead role, he screen-tested several relatively unknown actors, including the current Man of Steel Henry Cavill. But who did he want to play Superman’s arch-nemesis ? While making the rounds for his new action/romantic comedy This Means War, McG revealed to The Playlist that he’d secured Robert Downey Jr. ahead of the actor’s Hollywood comeback. “We had Robert Downey Jr. locked up to be Lex Luthor, which I think would have been extraordinary,” he said. Ultimately, though, Flyby fell apart, primarily because McG’s fear of flying prevented him from going to Sydney, Australia, where Warner Bros. wanted to shoot the bulk of the film. “J.J. wrote the script, and we got that to a really good place in the end,” he said. “But I’m to blame for [the film not happening].”
http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2012/02/21/robert-downey-jr-nearly-played-lex-luther-in-mcgs-superman/ So glad this movie never existed. McG is such a horrible, horrible director.
Supernatural is good.
I agree, it's one of my favorite shows. But he produces it, not directs.
Lex Luthor has been done to death anyway. Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey pretty much perfected the character's performance.
we need a good superman movie with doomsday already doomsday makes superman watchable/readable because he's actually capable of whooping superman's ass/killing him
for some reason I think the new movie will just be a remake of Superman 2.
Ffs this is some of the worst journalism in this article, what kind of news outlet introduces a person with a three-letter acronym and just assumes they know what "McG" is (also yeah I'm a philistine but my point still stands). But talking about the article, I'm amazed that this guy managed to destroy his entire prospective movie on his own just out of fear of flying. I guess it was a stroke of luck if this guy was really as bad as they're saying he is.

An McG Superman? Good thing it didn't happen. I'm nervous enough about Snyder doing it. At least hopefully Nolan can keep him from fucking up.
A hero for marvel and a villain for DC but good i dont see him being a good Luther.
the idea of nic cage being superman is truly hilarious [editline]23rd February 2012[/editline] just damn [editline]23rd February 2012[/editline] i realize this isn't the same movie as they're talking about but it was yet another unrealized superman film so i figure its relevant
I've never seen a movie with Robert Downey Jr. in it that I didn't like, honestly.
Fuck McG, basically.
I've never seen a movie with Robert Downey Jr. in it that I didn't like, honestly.
Hes one of my favorite actors

Please, just stop making superman movies. He's a terrible character and I don't wish the burden of making superman interesting on any director, or actor for that matter.

Batman is the only one from DC who works in a movie. [editline]23rd February 2012[/editline] Honestly, I'm a bigger fan of Marvel anyway.

Superman in the comics and animated series is good, it's just the film adaptions (which is what people primarily think of when they hear superman) are not that great, and are always just Lex Luther Lex Luther Lex Luther oh and Lex Luther. That and super hero movies don't work. Even good super hero movies don't follow the source material or often resemble what the fans are used to and love.
Watchmen was good, but it's not really DCs (well, legally it is).
And Alan Moore refuses to ever work with DC again.
I love how the reason for why the movie fell apart is so simple. Fucking fear of flying :v:
A Superman movie can be good if the director and writers don't just make him completely invincible, and have a valid threat against him. He has more villains than just Lex.
A Superman movie can be good if the director and writers don't just make him completely invincible, and have a valid threat against him. Basically the idea behind it is that Superman lands in the USSR instead of the USA and fights for communism instead of capitalism. It's a very good read if you haven't read it before. Probably one of my favorite Superman stories.
uhhh... McG is actually his name mate.
Not his real name.
That and super hero movies don't work. Even good super hero movies don't follow the source material or often resemble what the fans are used to and love.
How could it follow the source material and stay true when it's being condensed into 1-2 hours?
Not his real name.
I'm not sure people care this much about McG.
Not his real name.
its the name he goes by who gives a shit
A Superman movie can be good if the director and writers don't just make him completely invincible, and have a valid threat against him. If anyone ever considers watching Smallville, be sure to watch it past the first season. It's rather bad, but it improves a lot in season 2 and beyond.
Downey would have made an awesome Lex Luthor I have to admit.
