Nintendo is preparing to unleash the full force of its development and marketing artillery against Apple after profits tumbled at the Japanese giant for the first time in six years.
The reversal of fortunes, though flagged in advance by the company, throws the spotlight on threats to what once seemed a bulletproof business.
Satoru Iwata, the Nintendo president, is understood to have told his senior executives recently to regard the battle with Sony as a victory already won and to treat Apple, and its iPhone and iPad devices, as the “enemy of the future” .
That, say analysts, may be premature. Last Christmas, almost twice as many Wii consoles were sold in the US as the PlayStation3. But games developers increasingly see Sony’s machine as having a large enough base of users to justify not making titles for the Nintendo machine.
Sony and Microsoft are also making their own forays into family-oriented gaming and the iPhone has emerged as a formidable competitor for Nintendo in the handheld gaming arena once dominated by the DS console.
Sources close to the Kyoto-based company describe a mood of concern as the hardware and software divisions race to restore the capacity to “surprise” — a traditional feature of Nintendo games that Mr Iwata holds dear.
The company’s recent strategy has centred on creating devices aimed not just at children and dedicated — generally male — gamers, but at the whole family. Two years ago, the company claimed to have permanently altered the demographics of video games by raising the average age and the gender mix of gamers. Unfortunately, the very people it claimed to have converted — high-school girls and men aged between 30 and 40 — reported that they would rather have an iPhone than a DS in their pockets or handbags.
Although the company ended the 2009 financial year squarely in the black, analysts described Nintendo’s profit slide as a “triple punch”.
Despite selling over 10 million copies of the latest Mario title for the Wii console, the pipeline of new games has stopped delivering the sort of blockbusters that drove console sales to record levels in the first two years after its launch. Nintendo has also suffered from the financial crisis. Households around the world spent most of last year in full belt-tightening mode, and remain cautious about buying games with a relatively short playing-life.
But the most striking decline was in sales of the consoles. Although both the Wii and DS have outsold their Sony and Microsoft counterparts, the lower technology of the Nintendo machines is starting to show. With far less processing power than either the PlayStation3 or Xbox 360, the Wii is suffering. Its sales were 21 per cent down in the year to March 31. Net profits at Nintendo, meanwhile, fell to Y228.64 billion (£1.6 billion) from Y279.09 billion.

Ok im all up for joining Nintendos side what about you guys
Incoming fanboys.
Nintendo all the way
Having to compete with a company that creates something as useless as the iPad seems pretty lame.
Edit;
It shouldn't even be a competition
The only thing that make nintendo consoles good are the games and it's no surprise that developers like developing for more capable hardware
I don't think nintendo and apple are really competing on the same level though
Nintendo. I hate apple.
Edit; Double ninjad automerge
I think the problem for Nintendo is that Apple's devices can do so many more things than just play games. There's a real diversity that Nintendo is unable to offer to consumers. I can see why they want to go after Apple's market share, but I'm not sure if they can compete directly unless they're going to offer something that can do everything. The only issue for apple's gaming intentions at this stage is probably the controls.

Well nintendo is starting to do that. On their DSi they tried adding clocks, calculators, calendars and other stuff for download just like the iphone has (except iphone's stuff is already built in).

True, but it's still not as diverse as iPhone OS. These things take time of course.
Nintendo phone, anyone?
Nintendo had previously said that they weren't trying to compete with the iPhone, and now they are. Awesome.
I'm for Nintendo of course.
Someone needs to tell Nintendo that the reason why people buy Apple products isn't the same reason why people buy Nintendo products.

Still, I'd love to see Apple get taken down a gigantic fucking notch.
I don't care, I buy what I like and I like what I buy. For all I care Nintendo could be gods of the universe and Apple uses puppies as fuel for a giant god killing laser.
Well, I would never buy a DS, since I don't want to play the games or running around with it.
I carry my iPhone, and the games there is enough for me. Doodle Jump and Angry Birds is that kind of games I like, when on the move.
However, my littlebrother at 9, has been talking about wanting a iPhone/iPod Touch for a long time - because of the games.
He has a DSI XL, and broken DS
I have a DSi and a iPhone and both of them have their addictive games and there fun parts.
but the iphone is more built to be a PDA and the dsi is more built to be a portable gaming device. it's gunna be a bloody battle though :v:
Nintendo DS vs. Iphone.
Interesting battle.
Sadly I want to see Nintendo win.
Hopefully this will mean Nintendo will do something other than make the same games over and over again with minor alterations.

It's not just Nintendo. Practically every company makes the same shit over and over again.
The difference is that Nintendo has a formula that actually works.
^ I agree, they keep remaking Mario, Zelda and Pokemon games for the Wii and the DS, and I keep loving them.
Any iPhone game which requires you to sit down for more than 2-3 mins of concentration tend to suck. It will never be a serious games platform.

It's gonna be "Apple vs. Everyone" soon.
Both pls
I thought I was over video games because I don't touch my GameBoy anymore, but heck, I'm on my iPod Touch for games like Angry Birds.
Fuck both of them, I lost faith in Nintendo when the Wii came out, and Apple is just a money-making machine.

Why would you lose faith what the fuck.
I want to see Steve Jobs getting his ass kicked by Nintendo.

The Wii is a good console, and Nintendo has released lots of fun games for it.
