They're black? what
They're black? what
at first i thought it was othello thats a story that needs some rep
Why does everyone have to be black
Why does everyone have to be black
because then it gets called a "white supremacist" show
When PC goes too far....
I don't mind the inclusion of other people. But it's odd to disregard everything the setting makes and cast a character as Black or another race. Should Mulan be a Caucasian? Should Zulu be an Asian man? It's odd.
I think the real question is "Why a sequel?!"
Not to state the obvious, but wasn't the whole point of Romeo and Juliet that their deaths were the only thing that united the two families?

Like when Rooney Mara was cast as Tiger Lily in the new Peter Pan movie, PC got mad and raised the racism card. PC people are unable to see nothing BUT race and skin color and don't look at accomplishment and skill of actors regardless of race and endorse or discredit based upon that solely - I feel they see race but not person. http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/sep/25/joe-wright-rooney-mara-tiger-lily-peter-pan David Moleynux in those comments said it really good: "So, it is racist for Rooney Mara to play Tiger Lily, but it is progressive for Idris Elba to play James Bond. The hypocrisy would be funny if the people peddling it weren't so tiresome. For the record, I think Rooney Mara will make a good Tiger Lily, just as I think Idris Elba would make a good James Bond. There are things worth worrying about, and this isn't one of them."
This is odd
At least it isn't that weird re-imagining with in the modern world with guns and the priest was a hippie.
Okay so they're black. Who gives a shit? We should focus on whether or not this will be a good story not this "PC GONE MAD" bullshit. I'm so sick of it.
because then it gets called a "white supremacist" show
If characters are White in a movie then it's White supremacist? Man I love Lord of the Rings so I guess I'm a nazi now. [editline]18th May 2016[/editline]
Okay so they're black. Who gives a shit? I'm so sick of it.
If a historically black character like Rosa Parks or MLK were played by a White man would you say the exact same thing?
hoo /pol/ is gonna have a field day with this one
Okay so they're black. Who gives a shit? We should focus on whether or not this will be a good story not this "PC GONE MAD" bullshit. I'm so sick of it.
your right im gonna write up a harriet tubman movie played by a white woman right now
Okay so they're black. Who gives a shit? We should focus on whether or not this will be a good story not this "PC GONE MAD" bullshit. I'm so sick of it.
Because in Medieval Verona their wasn't any socially acceptable interracial relationships or blacks holding titles and power. It ruins the suspension of disbelief for some feel good political correctness thing and therefor is not a good story. That's why it matters. Its probably not even this abominations biggest issue either.
For all of you remarking about "how I'd feel if *insert historical black figure here* was played by a person of a different race", there's a huge difference between a historical film and something such as the works of Shakespeare, which are highly interpretive even to this day. After all, if you guys have a problem with there being a black woman in what's supposed to be Medieval Verona, shouldn't you guys also be mad about how there were fucking Kalashnikovs in the Sir Patrick Stewart version of Macbeth, which is supposed to be set in medieval times as well? In any case, I'm just sick and tired of people screaming "PC" whenever something has been interpreted in a different way. [editline]17th May 2016[/editline] fucking sort of ninjad
Why does everyone have to be black
racism is an easy to understand reason for hate
Oh don't you dare change some character into caucasian, that is racism and whitewashing according to the PC people. Granted the historical accuracy is askew in this (cue a dozen tumblrites showing badly sourced "proof" of higher class non-caucasian people in X period) unless the story directly requires them to be a specific race for a crucial reason, it's not that bad. I mean I wouldn't be surprised if they were just exploiting the whole PC in-crowd hoping they'd ignore any potential bad writing/acting like in American Horror Story but it doesn't seem that blatant here.
Are you guys really defending historical accuracy in Shakespeare? Shakes-"the story of Romeo and Juliet is based off an Italian poem and resembling reality probably isn't its point unlike his historical plays"-peare? Shakes-"what if ghosts/witches"-peare? You guys wanna talk about actual historical accuracy? Show me a Romeo and Juliet where Juliet is played by a young boy. Cause that's how the story was portrayed back then.
Okay so they're black. Who gives a shit? We should focus on whether or not this will be a good story not this "PC GONE MAD" bullshit. I'm so sick of it.
ABC's entire marketing push is based on hyper-progressive politics.
ABC's entire marketing push is based on hyper-progressive politics.
In that case, wouldn't it make more sense to focus on the story rather then what fucking skin color some people are? If they sacrificed it for this then yeah, fuck them but if not who gives a shit?
Cool that you're lumping me in with everyone else but I haven't made a single comment on the show's quality, cause all I've seen is a promotional trailer. Why you don't you dial your misplaced indignation back a couple thousand rpm before making assumptions.
You guys wanna talk about actual historical accuracy? Show me a Romeo and Juliet where Juliet is played by a young boy. Cause that's how the story was portrayed back then.
Might have been portrayed, but was not written as. There's a big difference.
Might have been portrayed, but was not written as. There's a big difference.
He wrote populist literature and re-purposed myths for the "common audience", not really seeing a difference here other than the obvious political angle, which is actually something the man did himself.
Looks like there's veeery little reason to connect this to Romeo and Juliet. Everything interesting about that story ended, well, at the end of the story. I'd say that this should be it's own, separate story, but just looking at that trailer it seems that there's very little substance anyway. I mean I can't be certain that they won't make anything interesting just from watching the trailer, but nothing at all here is hooking me.
Okay so they're black. Who gives a shit? We should focus on whether or not this will be a good story not this "PC GONE MAD" bullshit. I'm so sick of it.
Make Othello white. See the reaction. See the double standard.

Why you don't you dial your misplaced indignation back a couple thousand rpm before making assumptions.
What are you talking about? I have assumed nothing, only commented on how if that is true that ABC is marketing this movie entirely on hyper-progressive politics, we should really be focusing on other things to see if the hyper-progressive politics really affected the quality or not. If it seemed I was solely targeting you, then I'm sorry, but I was talking about this in general, not directly at you. Maybe you should make sure you're not assuming anything when you're making an argument based upon the disproving of assumptions. [editline]17th May 2016[/editline]
Make Othello white. See the reaction. See the double standard.
Then they're in the wrong as well. You don't have to stoop to their level.
