These empires were all wiped out or weakened during the age of European colonialism, however. None of this is really taught in Western schools.

He's claiming that Africa was doing better than the Europeans during like before 600 BCE. If the only presence where you can point to a non arab africa doing well is some short lived states during or after colonialism, it's not helping your case.

Socrates predates those empires by about a thousand years. But those empires should be more widely known, shame the manuscripts in Timbuktu were burned last year. The history of them selling slaves to the arabs should be included in the teaching about them. I am guessing reverend Al is leaving that part out.
