• Most next gen console games will run at 30 FPS according to Carmack
John Carmack tweeted about the next generations games. He has been asked about framerates in games in the next console generation. Here he answers. "Unfortunately, I can almost guarantee that many of the games to the next console generation will aim to run at 30 frames per second," he writes. If he based this on a knowledge of the hardware of Sony and Microsoft's next consoles or if it is only speculation is unclear. Maybe a combination.
https://twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack/statuses/280752127238889473 http://loading.se/news.php?pub_id=22752&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=facebook
Wow this is stupid.
It's not that bad. 30 fps is still quite playable.
It's not that bad. 30 fps is still quite playable.
The rumoured hardware on next gen consoles can quite well go 60 FPS in games if they optimise with that certain spec of hardware.
Wow those 120Hz televisions must be paying for themselves.
Wow this is stupid.
It will be like that if they will do a graphical increase instead of framerate and resolution increase.
Wow those 120Hz televisions must be paying for themselves.
Doubt you can do 1080p @ 120hz through HDMI.
It's not that bad. 30 fps is still quite playable.
Playable, sure, but 60fps should be the standard. I'm going to be disappointed if the next gen is all about making things look pretty rather than also focusing on important things like better AI, better interactivity with the world, larger-scale environments, and the like. Just making the game look pretty is avoiding the issues that are holding games back from really making a big leap.
Doubt you can do 1080p @ 120hz through HDMI.
HDMI 1.3 is 10.2 Gbit/s. actually is 8.16 after overhead, but still fast.
Doubt you can do 1080p @ 120hz through HDMI.
If we can have 4k @ 60, I think we can do 1080 @ 240+. [editline]oops[/editline] Apparently this only applies to the very soon to arrive hdmi 2.0
I'm fine with this, as long as the resolution is 720p or above. Regulars of eurogamer's Digital Foundry will know what I'm on about. Besides, we have PCs to do any stable 60fps gaming anyway.
It's not that bad. 30 fps is still quite playable.
Except... we are downgrading FPS for what reason? if anything it should stay at 60 or go higher.

The future will be all about having better animations.
The reason to go with 30 fps is probably because it will be easier on the hardware. Instead of forcing 60 fps, they can use the spare processing power for other things. The gameplay won't be as smooth but it won't matter because the jump between 30-60 is almost unnoticeable on most TVs.

My PC happily runs it at ~60FPS, but the Xbox - I don't even know what it's running at, but it's almost impossible to play in my opinion. The difference between them is extremely noticeable.
I never have any problems with 30fps, although anything lower would make my eyes hurt.

Upwards of 45 is terrible to play in my opinion because despite the game being smoother, it looks borderline unrealistically smooth and gives me motion sickness sometimes. I personally think 30 is a happy medium, because less than 24 is too choppy and higher than that can distract people who aren't used to it. That's just my opinion though, because I do see how a higher framerate can be fine for some people, just not me.
We're getting to the point where having better graphics just won't matter very much. Gee, I dunno.
I'd say 30 is my minimum, anything lower and I feel weird looking around. Maybe on consoles it feels different since you don't use a mouse, and thus can't jerk your view around as fast.

Then 30 fps will look awful.
It's not that bad. 30 fps is still quite playable.
sorry what
What is he basing this on or is he just saying it because he is saying it.
Download a 60 fps movie and watch it for 10 minutes - you'll get used to it so fast you won't even notice. Then 30 fps will look awful.
What movies have even 48fps versions available, let alone 60fps.
( The cars accelerate and decelerate faster and slower due to the cap, but pay no attention to that. Notice when it swerves left and right, that's why we need 60fps. )
but like i already said it makes me sick so why would i do that
Yeah, I'm sure you throw up when within 5 feet of a 60 fps video. Noire is capped at 30 fps because of the face animations. Of course it won't work properly at 60 fps. (plus Youtube can't display 60 fps) [editline]18th December 2012[/editline]
( The cars accelerate and decelerate faster and slower due to the cap, but pay no attention to that. That's a problem with the physics caused by the removal of the cap. It's not better at 60 fps, it's broken! [editline]18th December 2012[/editline]
What movies have even 48fps versions available, let alone 60fps.
I meant a video.
It's not that bad. 30 fps is still quite playable.
Visually it's fine (as long as it's stable), but it comes with an excruciating input lag which makes the game much less enjoyable for me.

If you game on a budget-priced console on an HD display, you can't really expect high graphical quality AND a smooth 60FPS. 30FPS is a necessary compromise, otherwise you can buy a PC.
The swerving left and right, how can you not see the jerky camera?
I can see the jerky everything because the physics are broken.
