The idea is called [URL=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_income]basic income[/URL]. Technology develops and will eventually replace almost all the jobs of people with machines that can do everything much more efficient. So I assume in the far future this type of security will be pretty common and widespread. In one scenario all of this happens and humanity change from a civilization of people that are constantly working to another society where people express themselves and make creative works without worry until the robots kill everyone. Another scenario is that the division of wealth becomes a chasm. The rich are extremely rich and the poor are ludicrously poor. Riots happen and then robots rise up to destroy human civilization.

Riots happen and then robots rise up to destroy human civilization.[/QUOTE] Basically if the people making the stuff grossly overcharge for their product and make it so that all the prices stay the same as they are currently, then the latter will happen. However, if they adjust their prices fairly and don't corroborate with the other companies to keep prices at a fixed rate, then the former will happen.
