http://blogs.msdn.com/b/directx/p/directx12.aspx yes guys that is all MS has to say, literally click the link to see that. That is literally everything. That means new video cards again guys, not like OpenGL exists or anything.
It's probably Windows 8.1+ only.
I just fucking bought a new card yesterday god damnit
You aren't forcing me to use Windows 8, Microsoft. No matter how hard you force this.
I'm going to laugh if it has a low level API and kills Mantle so quickly after their launch. But AMD made the first step and has paved the way for improving performance, good on them.
Was actually about to order a 770, guess I'll hold off for a bit
Was about to get a 780ti then decided to hold off and see if they announce anything, a week later now, I'm reading this.. I guess I'll get an upgrade around Witcher 3 times
Was about to order a 790. Maybe I'll hold out for a while.

OpenGL will get the same treatment eventually too.
I was going to get an 800, but I guess I'll see what happens
Windows 9 exclusive
DX12 can go fuck itself. I'm not buying new GPU again.
I just bought a radeon hd 7870 ghz edition and this gets announced. :suicide:
You aren't forcing me to use Windows 8, Microsoft. That would be the single most asshole thing they could do to force people to upgrade to 8.1+
Who says you have to buy a new graphics card?
Who says you have to buy a new graphics card?
Don't want to look pleb using an outdated video card. (Yes, I know that's ironic coming from me)
opengl superior
It's probably Windows 8.1+ only.
because of how the lower-level parts of it will work, it will probably require a large-scale driver stack rewrite... it will probably be much more difficult to port it to Win7. however, I think most people would be OK switching to Win8 if Dx12 offered some sort-of amazing killer feature or massive performance improvement, even-more-so with the new update that is focused around making it better with the mouse.
I don't see the big deal, windows 8.1 isn't all that bad, the only thing I find to be wrong with it is metro and that's nothing to me as I stopped using even the start menu ages ago. The performance increase is worth it

I still remember the demos that real-world products never touched.
Indeed they did. First off this shit will not be mature anytime soon, no matter how much money ms throws at it, and secondly, split prioritization isn't helping any devs get their slices and milestones done. Unless ms can offer apple-apple reasons and substantiated and noninflated metrics to upgrade, it's not going to happen any faster than 10 or 11.
Unlike the switches to directX 10 and 11 (though imo framerate stability and tessellation, respectively), the switch to 12 (if early reports are true) will be way better, simply because of the low-level API ala mantle.
I wonder why AMD went and made Mantle in the first place when they could have been working with the OpenGL guys to improve that. More prominently, I wonder why Microsoft continues to drag us along with DirectX. You'd think this would be much easier if everyone worked on the same standard.

[editline]5th March 2014[/editline] Eh close enough. [t]http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/standards.png[/t]
You'd think this would be much easier if everyone worked on the same standard.
Said by literally every programmer ever, but that's not going to happen.

Yes, yes, we've all seen that comic. It gets pulled up pretty much any time someone says the word "standards" around here. Still, though - I remember something called Project Fahrenheit a while back that was supposed to merge OpenGL and DirectX, but nothing ever came of that. But why AMD wants to split things even further is beyond me, especially considering Mantle is supposed to be an open platform just like OpenGL.
well ill guess ill also wait off since i was about to buy a gtx 920tiv20g345 dx11 with radeon graphics
I was going to order a 810, glad i didnt
-snip im dumb lole-
