European politics becoming more interesting:
The far-right Front National (FN) scored a historic victory in elections to the French senate on Sunday, winning its first ever seats in the upper chamber as the ruling Socialists and their leftwing allies lost their majority to rightwing parties.
The shock victory of Stéphane Ravier from Marseilles and David Rachline from Fréjus confirmed the party’s political breakthrough under Marine Le Pen, who has brushed the poisonous legacy of her father Jean-Marie Le Pen under the carpet in an attempt to “de-demonise” the FN.
The two seats are both in the FN’s stronghold in southern France, and at 26 Rachline, the mayor of Fréjus, is the youngest French senator ever elected.

Referring to the presidency after his election to the senate, Ravier said: “There’s just one more door to open, the Elysée. In 2017 we’ll have Marine Le Pen to do it.”

Le Pen hailed her party’s success as a “great victory, an absolutely historic victory” which she said would represent a “breath of fresh air in a rather sleepy chamber”.
“With every day that passes, our ideas are making progress,” she told BFMTV, predicting further gains for the FN in the forthcoming territorial and regional elections.

Is two seats really something that big to worry about? Not quite sure how France's political system works.
An incredible 2 out of 348 seats.

They won't actually influence anything, but it's an important milestone for the legitimacy of them as a valid political party.

I didn't think so. And even in the US an independent gets elected every so often. I think this is still very far from this party sweeping the French government.

Clive Palmer would be an Australian example of this.
Clive Palmer would be an Australian example of this.
No, his party is a somewhat influential force in the Senate and has been able to modify government legislation. A better example would be Bob Katter or Andrew Wilkie in the House and Nick Xenophon, Bob Day or Ricky Muir in the Senate.
Actually Australia isn't really comparable because we have quite a number of independent and small party members in both chambers.
Far right goin' up all over the place in Europe.

What's not-moderate about socialists?
I hope these right wing parties don't hurt the EU too much, we got a good thing going, no need to let a bunch of conservative xenophobes ruin it for everyone. Its got its flaws but they will be ironed out in time.

Two seats is nothing to write home about especially considering no one at the Senate is going to take these two lunatics any seriously.

Americans have a very skewed view of politics compared to Europeans due to the entirely different political system over there. Their left is our mid-right.

Basically, the conversion is roughly something like this

(Disregarding stuff like straight-up nationalists because they're on the horizontal axis and I cannot into drawing a two-axis comparison chart.

The problem is the next president may be that "Le Pen".
This is more than "nationalists" her dad is a Neo-Nazi, and she is too.
I think some peoples don't remember who was Hitler.
Here is "Le Pen" with her skinhead bros

This reminds me of those political compass things.

Years of misinformation has made "left" synonymous with authoritarianism in america. While american government itself slowly slips towards authoritarian right, which in turn has pulled the definition of liberal to be have a higher (more authoritarian) threshold.
Its a shame that liberal values and left wing economics have been discarded in favour of right wing authoritarian stuff because communism (hint they werent communist) had a bad role model. Right wing authoritarians have had their fare share of bad role models also but that never seems to be used as a reason to try something else.
Just for shits and giggles, heres where I stand apparently. [t]http://www.politicalcompass.org/facebook/pcgraphpng.php?ec=-5.00&soc=-4.67[/t]

Milliband, leader of the Labour party in England, is right wing? Am I missing something here, or did politics overchannel go very, very wrong? What would Farage be?

Miliband isn't really left at all, he agrees with almost everything the Tories say. They haven't been leftist since the 70's, our politics is a massive joke.

Farage would likely be slightly more right than cameron (more privatisation, disallowing public services to immigrants) and slightly more authoritarian (Traditional british values and a number of his MP are rather "its ok what you do in the privacy of your homes but I don't want to see your corruption in public" or "The flooding is wrath from god because of the gays").
Its sad that the green party is the last legitimate bastion of moderate left wing liberals. This is one of the issues scotland faces and wants to leave, they're bottom left, rest of up is top right. There is no true socialism here any more, and thats a bad thing, socialism will defend the NHS and would never have let the royal mail be sold for a loss of £1 billion tax payer money.
