AT&T yesterday announced that its 2G wireless network was officially shut down on January 1, 2017, following four years of planning for its discontinuation.
As The Verge points out, the end of the 2G network means the original first-generation iPhone (also known as the iPhone 2G) will no longer receive cellular service from the AT&T network, effectively shutting it down.
Few people appear to have been using the original iPhone as there were no complaints from iPhone owners two weeks ago when the network was shuttered, but going forward, customers who keep the device as part of a collection will only be able to use it on WiFi.
And also all other 2G phones so not just this
I like it was originally advertised as a widescreen iPod. how times have changed.
Also that "high technology" bullet point is hilarious.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, considering how insecure 2G encryption is.
Even if 3G service is in place, it's possible to drop newer phones onto a parallel 2G network by jamming the former's frequencies.

Times fly, we are only now 10 years farther in time since that presentation.
What once was High Technology is now your joke for the day, as time continues on.

Woah I didn't realize that the iPhone is going to be 10 this year.
It feels only like a few years ago when I first saw the ads on TV.
look at all the shit they've removed since then, headphone jacks, and hand models
RIP GSM/GPRS/EDGE, slow and old as shit but workhorses that got us through a good decade or two.

put the weed down
i feel like without the iphone, we'd still be on 2G with 3G being this nichey expensive band for "smart" phones like blackberries.
look at how we introduced 4GLTE 5 years ago and haven't moved past it

There are already newer technologies being readied. But LTE is a relatively efficient use of spectrum, especially compared to 2G.

So there's no need to rush past LTE.

???
What I meant to say is that I don't really think of iPhones as being from the 2000s even though I saw the ads when it launched
I associate 2007 with flip-phones and such devices. The only smartphone I had experience with pre-2010 was a Windows Mobile device.
Then again I was using an iPad 2 until like November so I guess I just don't keep up with iOS devices.

maybe its anicdotal but here in the US with our garbage carriers, its more than likely that they haven't pushed past 4G because they don't have a push to do so like the iphone 3G did, on the other hand LTE is by definition, able to be upgraded without having to redo the entire standard like 3g or 2g.
the other thing is that 5G has been taking much longer to develope

from what I remember it wasn't until the iphone 3g that it even became popular since it didn't have internet access off of wifi yet, plus AT&T was famous for having like a 300 page contract for it
