Security concerns for Western Australia's new electronic voting system
The WA Electoral Commission has rejected computer experts’ view that its electronic voting system is vulnerable to hacking and votes could be potentially altered.
A paper co-written and published yesterday by five academics from the University of Melbourne, University of Adelaide and Canada’s Western University questioned the security around WA’s iVote software.
iVote allows people with a disability to cast a ballot online or by telephone, avoiding the need to attend a polling place.
But the authors claimed there was a risk the sanctity of the secret ballot could be breached or electronic ballots tampered with because the computer proxy server supporting the system was in the US, a move intended to stop denial of service attacks.
“Unfortunately, anyone with (legitimate or illegitimate) control of that server could use that access to read and modify votes,” the authors said. “Although there is no reason to believe that the server is insecure, this adds to the long list of trusted parties with the opportunity to read or modify iVote ballots without detection.
Terrible idea to have the vote flow through the US, even if it's secure.
Before the election, they should have a hackathon for these things (done in person) to see how things go.
I'm glad the AEC is sticking to its guns for federal elections being paper and pencil.

what the fuck?
Elections should stay solely within the country that they're in.
I though this would have been an actual technical issue. I guess this is still a valid concern though.
Don't we already have vote by mail? Why replace it. It works perfectly.
I voted the other day and noticed iVote. Didn't understand it though as you're exempt for voting if you have a severe intellectual disability so not sure who uses the service. Maybe more to do with physical disabilities
