The head of Samsung's mobile design unit, Chang Dong-hoon, has resigned following criticism of the company's latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S5.
Chang has stepped down in favour of the company's vice-president of mobile design, Lee Min-hyouk.
"The realignment enables Executive Vice President Dong-Hoon Chang to focus more on his role as Head of Design Strategy Team, the company's corporate design center which is responsible for long-term design strategy across all of the Samsung Electronics' businesses, including Mobile Communications," Samsung said in a statement to CNET.
Heres Hoping for a new design for the next galaxy!
It's good to let new blood in.
Reinvigorating a design can be the difference between success, and failure; even if the step-in is internal.
I just hope that there wasn't an internal conflict where the lead designer wanted to try something, and the higher ups gave the thumbs down.
People don't like change though.

Depends on the change

for a samsung phone, absolutely they do

In the case of the S5, though, design actually took a step backwards.

This is a design competing against clean, defined designs on the lines of the Xperia Z1S and the iPhone 5S:
[t]http://api.sonymobile.com/files/xperia-Z1-hero-black-1240x840-3c449514e1daf8b0652a5dc235530ebc.jpg[/t][t]http://theindustry.cc/assets/2012/09/2012-iphone5-gallery6-zoom.jpeg[/t]
Phone design has generally made trends over the past few years, progressing from rounded-square designs imitating the original popular touchscreen smartphone (the iPhone 3G) to more defined looks that subtly contrasts the metal frame and glass of a phone.
I'm not saying the S5 is a bad phone, because it truly isn't - it's waterproof, has a rather large battery, a nice screen and the fastest SoC around - but its design language dates back to what most would consider to be one of the first "modern" smartphones.
I honestly am not a fan of the iPhone design, the Xperia Z2 though? So beautiful

Is this post just talking about the thing on the back because that is the most different thing between them? Completely rounded edges is awful, it makes gripping the phone harder in my experience and the texture thing on the back is nice because it adds traction in your pocket and for someone who wears slacks and moves a lot at work I like it because my phone won't ever come close to falling out of my pocket.

I'm more referring to the fact that many phones utilize a (subtle or not) contrast in their building materials to be unique from the competition and showcase the quality building materials, instead of using a simple rounded-back-made-of-plastic design that's been in use since the iPhone 3G.
A better example of this sort of design would be the HTC One:

You can have both a high-quality looking and a nicely handling phone at the S5's price point, so there's little point using such an old plasticky design as a basis and add a flattened golf ball to the back even if the phone itself is rather functional.

This reminds me more so of a Galaxy S2, that's an awful design choice
Tbh even the Nexus 5 looks better than the S5 and its almost half its price :v:
Honestly the design of the S5 was what made me drop it as an option when I was shopping for a new phone, Samsung and Apple are both due for redesigns to freshen up their flagships and Samsung simply didnt deliver on that front.
I feel like the only guy who likes the look of the back covers of the S5
Tbh even the Nexus 5 looks better than the S5 and its almost half its price :v:
Last I heard you cant get the Nexus 5 on Verizon. Thats an issue.
I feel like the only guy who likes the look of the back covers of the S5
shape? sure, I love the shape of the phone - it's the indents that I really can't seem to like too much.
I'm on an S5 right now, and it's easily one of the worst designs I've ever seen. As someone already said it looks exactly like an S2, feels cheap as hell, and what no one ever brings up is the ribbed edge encircling the phone. Picture the chrome ribbed side of a table in a 50's diner. It's a ridiculous clusterfuck of mistakes.
I'd step down too if my job consisted of
"boss its done"
'Awesome work johnson! the S3 will sell beautifully! Start work on the S4 immediately!'
Samsung is not the phone maker to go to when you want creative phone designs. :v:
The HTC One is really setting the bar for what a high-quality smartphone should look like. You actually get some high-grade materials for the price you pay rather than just another lump of plastic in the shape of a box with rounded corners.
Camera's crap though, and that's a deal breaker for a lot of people.
I still adamantly hold my stance on the Lumia 800 being the best designed smartphone, visually.
This is a design competing against clean, defined designs on the lines of the Xperia Z1S and the iPhone 5S
Yeah, the S5 has a weird rim around the front. But the Xperia actually looks too rectangular to me, and what's up with the bezel? I guess the bottom bezel needs to be as big as the top bezel for symmetry, but then it has software buttons, so it's completely wasted space. The S5 has smaller bezels and the bottom one serves a purpose. I mean, I prefer the S3, so I agree that the S5 is a step backwards, but I don't see what's so great about the design of the Xperia Z1S and the iPhone 5S.

The Nokia N9 is better.
I homestly don't care how my phone looks like, only how well they run games
Camera's crap though, and that's a deal breaker for a lot of people.
I like how they promised the end of the pink crap on the photos. Both my and my friend's One have it.
I'm still lost on the part where phones became a fashion statement. Almost everyone I know puts their phone in a protective case anyways, so I don't even pretend to follow why this is so important.
If you want fancy aesthetics, get a case that has designs on it.

If it's like the Nexus 4 (should be). It's not tied to a provider if you buy it directly from Google. Buy it on the Play store and slap a SIM in. Bam. Verizon.

Verizon is a CDMA provider (no SIM).
Verizon is a CDMA provider (no SIM).
Their 4g phones use SIM cards, but I still don't know if it would work.
I feel like the only guy who likes the look of the back covers of the S5
I feel like the only guy that doesn't give a fuck what his phone looks like. It's a tool; all I care about is functionality. I don't need a phone to look "in" and "with the times" to define myself.
Verizon is a CDMA provider (no SIM).
God dammit phone standards. Why are you doing this.
Posting from a Galaxy S5 right now, and I don't give two fucks about the dated design. I wanted it for its featureset and specs, not how the case looks.
The phone does everything that I could want it to and more (except for root, fuck Verizon)
