Iron Man 3 may mark the end of Robert Downey Jr. solo movies with Disney and Marvel Studios, but it doesn’t necessarily represent the end of one of his most interesting “foes” – if we can even use that descriptor. Ben Kingsley, who was cast as the Mandarin and praised for his powerful performance by peers before the film’s release, was actually part of the biggest twist the Marvel Cinematic Universe has delivered yet, but arguably the most controversial for comic book fans since it drastically changed a key villainous character from the Marvel library. Advertised and disguised as the Mandarin, Kingsley’s character is revealed in Iron Man 3 to be no more than a [sp] drug-addicted actor named Trevor Slattery who is used in as a decoy in Iron Man 3 - a fictional terrorist of sorts to take the blame (and news headlines) for a series of attacks and events orchestrated by the true antagonist of Iron Man 3 - Guy Pearce’s Aldrich Killian. By the end if the film, Killian is seemingly killed, while Slattery lives on, seemingly in custody. [/sp] Speaking with the Belfast Telegraph, Kingsley confirmed that he’s returning to Marvel for an undisclosed project, one where he gets to work again with the Iron Man 3 crew. “It’s a secret Marvel project. I’m not allowed to say any more, you’re going to have to wait and see… I was with many members of the crew that were involved in Iron Man 3. It was lovely to see them again. It was great to be with this wonderful family.” “I think they have enormous taste as creative artists. There’s nothing lazy or gratuitous about their work. They are at the top of their game, and they’re great company to keep.”
http://screenrant.com/ben-kingsley-mandarin-returns-marvel-one-shot/ Fuck the writers for ruining one of Iron Man's most haunting villains, but I hope it isn't a one shot about [sp] Trevor Slattery's dumbass antics [/sp]
Whatever it is, I'm sure we'll neverrr see it coming
I bet the story goes like this: Ben Kingsley turns out to be the real guy and tells Stark that Guy Pierce was a distraction.
I bet the story goes like this: Ben Kingsley turns out to be the real guy and tells Stark that Guy Pierce was a distraction.
Probably. Not quite sure what else they'd bring him back as. IM3 wrote him off as just an actor and nothing more, almost like he didn't matter at all.
Yeah, I remember getting really hyped up for the movie and shit. Till they just completely destroyed on what could-have-been a damn great movie.
Yeah, I remember getting really hyped up for the movie and shit. Till they just completely destroyed on what could-have-been a damn great movie.
Reduced hulkbuster to a fucking floor jack.
I liked Iron Man 3. Much better than IM2 and on the same level as the first one. I don't mind the story twist. No one saw it coming and yeah, many got pissed off, but Shane Black made the movie very entertaining.
maybe it's because I don't read or care about the comics but I thought the twist was great
If you don't read the comics, read up on Mandarin, and who he is. What he does, WHO he is, etc. Then maybe you'll be like, "well fuck that could've been pretty fucking rad"
Isn't comic Mandarin all Harry Potter and shit?
If you don't read the comics, read up on Mandarin, and who he is. Had they done the Mandarin for realsies, they'd have to pulls some magnificent bullshit to make him beatable, he's overpowered as shit. I loved the twist in IM3
Seems like a typical comic book villain with way too much power and apparent intelligence but still manages to get beaten by bloke in a robo-suit.
So basically Guy Pearce's character but with an actually interesting background?
I wonder how Joss Whedon reacted to the twist, speaking of which I think the only Iron Man villain that was greatly pulled off in all three films was Iron Monger
Having watched some Iron Man cartoons I thought the mandarin was out of place as he used magic when the themes of the show were about machines, technology and ingenuity. Going into see Iron Man 3 it was almost as if the writers agreed with me by making a joke of the mandarin and I loved it. I can totally understand how some people hated that direction though.
So basically Guy Pearce's character but with an actually interesting background?
Not really, Guy Pearce was just a rich, smart guy. The comic Mandarin is a genius kung-fu orphan who found an alien spaceship with a bunch of rings which give him a bunch of stupid powers. He can also use alien tech to teleport people from anywhere in the world or something apparently. He is so overpowered that he should never lose but always does anyway.
I bet the story goes like this: Ben Kingsley turns out to be the real guy and tells Stark that Guy Pierce was a distraction.
Guy Pierce specifically says "I am the Mandarin" at the end of the movie, though. Which I felt made the movie really awesome after realizing, yeah this guy IS the badass motherfucker we were looking for.

I liked his acting quite a lot but the writing, eugh.
I thought it was that he made people think he uses magic, when it's really alien technology.
With Clarke's Law, it doesn't really matter; in the end it's the same for the purpose of the show.

Iron Man is all about technology, so his arch nemesis defies his main theme, with his power being the polar opposite of Stark's
If this means we get a [sp]non-Extremis verison of the character[/sp] I am all for it.
I bet the story goes like this: Ben Kingsley turns out to be the real guy and tells Stark that Guy Pierce was a distraction.
And then Pepper Potts turns out to be the real Iron Man and tells Mandarin that Tony Stark was just a distraction. Then Hulk jumps in and gets angry about everything.

That being said, I never read the Iron Man comics before, so I enjoyed the twist with the Mandarin at the end of Iron Man 3. Though I will admit I wasn't terribly impressed with Guy Pearce's character. I mean, he played him well, but he is such a stereotypical villain. Oh well, I guess I shouldn't expect more from a comic-book movie. :v:

A little bit of comedic relief and yet another generic white villain with a revenge plot, that's all.
Didn't Mandarin get his powers from rings and shit, then later [sp]Infuse it into his spine?[/sp] They could still have him be Mandarin.
I don´t know why they couldn´t just put "magic" in Iron Man 3 with a real Mandarin. At first the world sees his "magic" and a cult of the rings is growing in power, while Tony Stark still refuses that magic exists. Then he gets a ass whooping, then some drama because Happy died. And then at the end he builds the real Extremis Armor and it turns out Mandarins rings dont have any magic at all and are just technology at a higher techlevel as Tony cheesily quotes Arthur C. Clarkes law about "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Now I am the magician" and bam he blasts the Mandarin into the next dimension, saves Pepper from her stereotypical impending doom, and eats his Shwarma 2: Electric Boogaloo. Without blowing up all his armors.
I thought it was that he made people think he uses magic, when it's really alien technology.
That was one of the cartoons, Armored Adventures. Though that could work, but what if they hint at it in the Agents of Shield TV show, by having the team find magical rings? That would be pretty cool, well to me at least.
