So what does that mean for the future of Studio Ghibli? Will he be still somewhat involved with their productions or is he retiring from that as well?
Damn, and here I was wanting to see a Howle's Moving Castle sequel (there is a sequel to the book it's based on) by Miyazaki
Some great titles. It's sad to see him leave the business but everything comes to a end. Hope he enjoys his retirement.
He actually wanted to do an adaption of pippi longstocking but was denied by the author herself. Too bad really because I think it would've been amazing.
A sad day for the world of cinema and animation. Miyazaki's films will be cherished forever.
That sucks. I really love his works. Shame we won't be getting any more.
Nooooo :(. I loved his movies so much. My all time favorite was Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Well deserved retirement I suppose.
I grew up with Totoro and Nausicaä. It's really sad to hear this. His son is a good animator and could possibly take over but from his history he doesn't have the best of stories.
its okay, he'll come back out of retirement when he's needed, like he always does or when his son wants to make another movie and he does it for him anyway
dude looks great for 72

I remember reading recently about an author actually crying and walking out of a movie premier based on her book, can't remember the title right now but I'll check back where I found it

It was directed by Miyazaki's son though.
What a shame, his work makes up for like whole half of all the Anime I can acknowledge as really good.
What a shame, his work makes up for like 3/4 of Anime I can acknowledge as really good.
i think i can safely say you haven't watched much anime then. miyazaki's work is outstanding but there are many other great anime directors
i think i can safely say you haven't watched much anime then. miyazaki's work is outstanding but there are many other great anime directors
Saying that wouldn't be far from truth, probably :v:
so sad, we won't be swing any more giant airshipchickens or uberbombers anytime soon, I was hoping they'd do another movie about war like howls castle or Laputa , still spirited away stole my heart
i think i can safely say you haven't watched much anime then. miyazaki's work is outstanding but there are many other great anime directors
It's hard to tell with all the cutesy obnoxious moe shit flying around, anime gets rather off-putting after looking at that Akira though hnnng
Saying that wouldn't be far from truth, probably :v:
ya I mean his studio consults on a lot of anime, like they help with the initial designs and stuff. they even worked on neon genesis the originals. [editline]1st September 2013[/editline] their contributive works page reads like a must watch list of anime , guren lagan neon Genesis , full metal, black lagoon all good ones I know of off the top of my head
So what does that mean for the future of Studio Ghibli? Earthsea was a bit of a disaster in my opinion but there's so many other people that I don't think having Hayao Miyazaki retire would kill the company or anything like that.
It's "Tales from the Earthsea", a movie considered to be the "worst of the Ghibli films". It was directed by Miyazaki's son though.
Compared to all the other Ghibli movies, Tales from the Earthsea was quite bland and boring.
It's hard to tell with all the cutesy obnoxious moe shit flying around, anime gets rather off-putting after looking at that Akira though hnnng
It's mostly been the case for shows. I really recommend that you should look at movies/ovas (FLCL, Redline, Spriggan, GiTS). They're either strong in a narrative or animation sense.
Thank you for all you've given us, Miyazaki. You shall be missed.
He seems like he would be such a cool dad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BPTNdmdJSc [sp]That's from a slightly longer documentary about the making of spirited away (just look up "spirited away behind the scenes")[/sp]
Now I have to rewatch Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. Its been years but I know they were pretty fantastic.

His son more recently produced From Up On Poppy Hill and It's a lot better then Earthsea, but really Hayao Miyazaki has been apart of all the best ghibli movies.
"retire from the production of feature-length films." Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but the specific wording makes me think he's just switching to doing shows or maybe short films instead.
