[release]At the celebration of its 50[SUP]th[/SUP] Dies Natalis, the anniversary of its Foundation Day in late November of this year, the University of Twente will be awarding honorary doctorates to the leading scientists Prof. Wolfgang Knoll and Prof. Helga Nowotny as well as the inspirational entrepreneur Henri Termeer. For their role in popularising science and technology, a honorary doctorate will also be awarded to the creators of the Discovery Channel's MythBusters, Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage.
Jamie Hyneman (1956) and Adam Savage (1967) have unique backgrounds in robotics, model-making and special effects - all of which have served them well since 2002, when they became the hosts of the television programme MythBusters on the Discovery Channel. On the show, they prove or debunk various theories, legends and myths by testing or spectacularly re-creating situations and seeing whether they are, in fact, possible. In the process, Jamie and Adam have made science, technology, and investigative principles both fun and cool to millions of viewers worldwide.
They both are honorary lifetime members of the California Science Teachers Association and also lecture at numerous universities. In April this year, they received the Harvard Humanism Award. The honorary supervisor is Prof. Stefano Stramigioli, UT Professor in Control Engineering/Advanced Robotics.

I realize the article is from June, but they'll be awarded the 25th of November.
I am not quite sure a doctorate is in order, but by god, they deserve something.

It's honorary, don't think it's worth anything besides showoff.

Looked it up, you can use it in the regular way except that you can't use it as proof where the formal academic background is required.

Pretty much this.
They sure as hell deserve it. Fucking love Adam and Jamie.
(;,,,,;)-I'd like to thank my family and Adam.
They are testing the myth that honorary doctorates are useful.

Their show undoubtedly got millions of people interested in science.
Massive explosions too, but most definitely science. :v:

I know, that is why I said that they deserve to get something. Maybe a grant or something. I just don't think they deserve doctorates, regardless of whether or not they are just for show.
I had the chance of going to the ceremony, but I decided to leave a spot for a real fan. I'm such a nice person.

Why would they need a grant? They already have one

Oh you...
For their role in popularizing science and technology
They definitely did a good job at that.
Always thought the show had too many variables in their "tests" giving biased results, just because they have a budget and have it on TV. Plus their recent episodes have been depressingly scripted, I liked it when they just said whatever.
Still cool though
Awesome, nice to know they're getting rewarded for making science easy for people normally uninterested in it to watch and learn things
What other television entertainment show has featured an actual active president of the US telling the hosts to go do something?

Still cool though
They've said that they actually don't show every single part of testing in the show because it couldn't fit in the show with the amount of time they have and in general it's not as entertaining
